A Post-hoc Study of D-Amino Acid Oxidase in Blood as an Indicator of Post-stroke Dementia
In conclusion, our data support that plasma DAO levels were increased in PSD patients and correlated with brain WMH, independent of age, gender, hypertension, and renal function. Plasma DAO levels may therefore aid in PSD diagnosis. Introduction Stroke is a risk factor for both vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease (1, 2). Functional recovery develops over the course of 26 weeks after a stroke (3), but the survivors are often left with disabilities. In addition to the sequelae of acute neuronal damage, the 1-year post-stroke dementia (PSD) rates after first-ever and recurrent stroke are ~10 and 30...

Acupuncture for Post-stroke Shoulder-Hand Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Acupuncture therapy seems effective for motor function, pain relief and activities of daily living in stroke patients with mild SHS, when it is used in combination with rehabilitation. The low certainty of evidence downgrades our confidence in making recommendations to clinical practice. Introduction Shoulder-hand syndrome (SHS) is a common condition among people who have had a stroke, with its reported prevalence ranging from 12% to 49% (1, 2). The main symptoms of SHS include pain, hyperalgesia, joint swelling and limitations in range of motion (ROM) (3). Post-stroke SHS is also named type I complex ...

Shengui Sansheng San Ameliorates Cerebral Energy Deficiency via Citrate Cycle After Ischemic Stroke
Conclusion In summary, SSS extraction significantly ameliorates cerebral energy metabolism via boosting citrate cycle, which mainly embodies the enhancements of blood glucose concentration, glucose and lactate transportation and glucose utilization, as well as the regulations of relative enzymes activities in citrate cycle. These ameliorations ultimately resulted in numerous ATP yield after stroke, which improved neurological function and infarcted volume. Collectively, it suggests that SSS extraction has exerted advantageous effect in the treatment of cerebral ischemia. Ethics Statement All animal operations were accor...

Intravenous Alteplase for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Taiwan: Can We Expand the National Health Insurance's Reimbursement Criteria?
In conclusion, the non-reimbursement group in Su, et al(3). is a mixture of stroke patients with very heterogeneous characteristics. With the advances of imaging selection modalities and new hyperacute treatment options nowadays, they should no longer be considered as an identical group of patients. We strokologists, as an emerging subspecialists, should devote more in dedicated and individualized selection of stroke patients for appropriate early recanalization therapy to improve their outcomes. Risk of Ischemic Stroke, Hemorrhagic Stroke, and All-Cause Mortality in Retinal Vein Occlusion: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.
Conclusions: People with RVO are at a significantly greater risk of developing stroke, ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke. However, RVO does not significantly increase the risk of all-cause mortality. PMID: 30271630 [PubMed]

Acupuncture May Decrease the Incidence of Post-stroke Dementia: A Taiwan Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusions: The association between stroke and dementia existed in both sexes, more prominent in male. Patients with stroke receiving acupuncture treatments showed decreased risk of dementia. Care must be taken evaluating these results because this study was limited to lack of information regarding lifestyles, stroke severities, and acupuncture methods that were used in treatments.

Risk of developing pleural empyema in patients with stroke: a propensity-matched cohort study
In conclusion, patients with stroke are at an elevated risk of developing pleural empyema. The risk is greater for those with hemor rhagic stroke than for those with ischemic stroke. The risk increases further for patients who undergo VP shunt implantation.

Pre ‐stroke physical activity is associated with fewer post‐stroke complications, lower mortality, and a better long‐term outcome
ConclusionDedicated leisure time physical activity for at least 30 min/d, at least 3 times per week for more than 6 months was associated with decreased stroke severity, fewer post‐stroke complications, lower mortality, and better outcomes. This article is protected by copyright. Risk of First Onset Stroke in SSRI-Exposed Adult Subjects: Survival Analysis and Examination of Age and Time Effects.
CONCLUSIONS: Use of SSRIs independently increases the risk of stroke across age strata. The risk is higher in younger adult subjects, and the stroke is more likely to be ischemic than hemorrhagic. The underlying mechanisms of stroke may be related to cerebral microbleeding or an overcorrection of hemostasis function. PMID: 28994901 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of stroke subtypes with risk of hip fracture: a population-based study in Taiwan
ConclusionOverall, stroke significantly increases the incidence of HF, and the risk of HF is significantly higher in ICH patients and female gender. We should identify stroke patients at risk of HF and pay more attention to prevent them from fall in poststroke long-term care.
