Association of Alternative Anticoagulation Strategies and Outcomes in Patients With Ischemic Stroke While Taking a Direct Oral Anticoagulant
This study provides Class II evidence that in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation suffering an ischemic stroke while being treated with a DOAC, continuing treatment with that DOAC is more effective at preventing recurrent ischemic stroke than switching to a different DOAC or to warfarin.PMID:37225430 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207422

Relationship between idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss and subsequent stroke
Conclusions:Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss did not increase stroke risk. The average annual stroke incidence rate after idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss was comparable with that in the general Taiwanese population. The study patients experienced stroke because they carried the risk factors for stroke. In patients with modified risk factors for stroke, efforts should be made to prevent stroke rather than idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Stroke‐Associated Differences in Rates of Activity of Daily Living Loss Emerge Years Before Stroke Onset
ConclusionIn adults at risk of stroke, disproportionate ADL limitations emerge well before stroke onset. Excess disability in stroke survivors should not be entirely attributed to effects of acute stroke or quality of acute stroke care. Although there are many possible causal pathways between ADL and stroke, the association may be noncausal. For example, ADL limitations may be a consequence of stroke risk factors (e.g., diabetes mellitus) or early cerebrovascular ischemia.

Mechanisms of early and delayed stroke after systematic off-pump coronary artery bypass.
CONCLUSION: The incidence of stroke after systematic OPCAB was low. Early and delayed strokes were equally distributed. Stroke mechanisms were predominantly embolic. Early and delayed stroke differed in their mechanisms. Early and delayed stroke should be considered as two separate entities and different preventive strategies should be applied in future intervention. PMID: 24560991 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Eating chocolate may slightly lower your risk of stroke
ConclusionThis study used a large prospective cohort of English residents to estimate the risk chocolate poses to cardiovascular death and disease. In addition, they systematically combed the research literature for other similar studies, combining their results with that of other researchers. By comparing the highest chocolate consumers with chocolate abstainers, they found that chocolate was linked to a lower risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. The risk for coronary heart disease was not statistically significant. Results from the meta-analysis of eight additional studies showed higher chocolate consumption was li...

Improvement of survival in Polish stroke patients is related to reduced stroke severity and better control of risk factors: the Krakow Stroke Database.
CONCLUSIONS: Reduced stroke severity is associated with better recognition and control of risk factors and explains the improvement of survival in Polish stroke patients. PMID: 27279847 [PubMed]

Stroke Risk among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Zhejiang: A Population-Based Prospective Study in China.
Conclusions. The relationship between stroke and T2DM was strong, especially in female. The incidence of stroke and stroke subtypes among patients with T2DM was up to 3-fold higher than in general population in Zhejiang province, especially the subtype of cerebral infarctions. Hypertension is the most Risk Factor Stroke in Indonesia Stroke Registry (P3.263)
Conclusions:Hypertension was the most risk factor in this study. Riskesdas (Basic Health Research) survey 2013 found that 25.8% of Indonesia’s population suffered from hypertension. There were only 7.2% of the population realized and known they had hypertension and only 0.4% of cases controlled by drug.Indonesian Neurological Association collaboration with Indonesian Doctors Association educate people to be aware of their blood pressure, reduce salt intake, increase vegetables and fruits diet, reduce body weight, and increase exercise.Study Supported by:This research was funded by Centre of Applied Health Technology ...

Factors associated with long ‐term mortality for stroke unit patients in Latvia
ConclusionAlcohol abuse as a pre ‐stroke risk factor, poststroke urinary incontinence as a neurological symptom, and dependence in grooming as a factor of disability were associated with earlier mortality in the first seven years after stroke.

Short-term exposure to air pollution and incidence of stroke in the Women's Health Initiative.
CONCLUSIONS: In this large cohort of post-menopausal US women, daily NO2 and NOx were associated with higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke, but ambient levels of four other air pollutants were not associated with higher risk of total stroke, ischemic stroke, or ischemic stroke subtypes. Incident Stroke and Its Influencing Factors in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and/or Hypertension: A Prospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with T2DM and/or HTN have a higher rate of new stroke and recurrence after 1-year follow-up. Actively identifying the controllable risk factors, such as smoking and physical inactivity, will help reduce the risk of stroke and recurrence in patients with T2DM and HTN.PMID:35224030 | PMC:PMC8863944 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2022.770025

Hospital-acquired infections after acute ischaemic stroke and its association with healthcare-related costs and functional outcome
ConclusionsIn patients, admitted for acute ischaemic stroke, stroke severity and diabetes mellitus were identified as the main predictors for post-stroke infection. Hospital-acquired infections were associated with increased costs and worse functional outcome.
