Differential associations between pre-diabetes, diabetes and stroke occurrence among West Africans
CONCLUSION: Pre-DM is strongly and independently associated with stroke in Africans. Improving glycemic control through screening, healthy lifestyle and pharmacotherapy at a population level may be strategic in reducing the rising burden of stroke in Africa.PMID:36194925 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2022.106805

Ischemic stroke of unclear aetiology: a case-by-case analysis and call for a multi-professional predictive, preventive and personalised approach
AbstractDue to the reactive medical approach applied to disease management, stroke has reached an epidemic scale worldwide. In 2019, the global stroke prevalence was 101.5 million people, wherefrom 77.2 million (about 76%) suffered from ischemic stroke; 20.7 and 8.4 million suffered from intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage, respectively. Globally in the year 2019 — 3.3, 2.9 and 0.4 million individuals died of ischemic stroke, intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage, respectively. During the last three decades, the absolute number of cases increased substantially. The current prevalence of stroke is 110 million ...

Indonesia Stroke Registry (S12.003)
Conclusion: Having the high prevalence of first ever and recurrent stroke, hypertension is the most common risk factor for both ischemic and hemorrhage stroke. This study was very useful for our country and our specialty to make some national plans to educate people to modify the life style, to train the general practitioners in primary health care as the first gate health service to provide community program for controlling some risk factors of stroke, Those must be the first priority of combating stroke in IndonesiaKeywords: Stroke registry, risk factor, functional outcome, cognitive outcomeDisclosure: Center for Applied...

Etiology and Treatment of Arterial Ischemic Stroke in Children and Young Adults
Opinion statement Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide (Go et al. Circulation 129:e28–292, 2014) and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Compared with older adults, arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) is relatively uncommon in children and young adults, comprising 5-10 % of all stroke (Biller Nat Rev Cardiol 6:395–97, 2009), but is associated with significant cost. In contrast to the declining overall incidence of stroke, some early studies suggest that the rate of stroke hospitalizations in children and young adults is rising (George et al. Ann Neurol 70:713–21, 2011; Kissela et al. S...

Prolyl Carboxypeptidase Activity Decline Correlates with Severity and Short-Term Outcome in Acute Ischemic Stroke.
Abstract Prolyl carboxypeptidase (PRCP) is an enzyme associated with cerebrovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hyperlipidemia. We aim to evaluate the relation between serum PRCP activity and severity, evolution and outcome of acute ischemic stroke. We used a specific RP-HPLC activity assay to measure PRCP activity in serum of 50 stroke patients at admission, and at 24 h, 72 h and 7 days after stroke onset to assess correlations with stroke severity based on the National Institutes of Health Stroke scale score (NIHSS), infarct volume on brain MRI scan, stroke outcome based...

The impact of associated diabetic retinopathy on stroke and severe bleeding risk in diabetic patients with atrial fibrillation: The Loire Valley Atrial Fibrillation Project.
ConclusionCrude rates of stroke/TE increased in a stepwise fashion when non-diabetic AF patients were compared to diabetics with no retinopathy and diabetics with retinopathy. However, we have shown for the first time that the presence of diabetic retinopathy did not emerge as an independent predictor for stroke/TE or severe bleeding on multivariate analysis. Background: Diabetes mellitus is recognized as a stroke risk factor in atrial fibrillation (AF). Diabetics with retinopathy have an increased risk of systemic cardiovascular complications, and also, severe diabetic retinopathy predisposes to ocular bleeds. We hyp...

Body Mass Index and Stroke Subtype in a Young Adult Stroke Population (I12-5D)
CONCLUSIONS: In our group of young adult stroke patients, we found the highest BMI in the group with intracranial atherosclerosis. Although this group represented a small number of patients, this young adult population is at increased risk for future strokes. It is important to educate them on lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and exercise in addition to the treatment of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia.Disclosure: Dr. Youn has nothing to disclose. Diabetic microvascular complications and stroke risk in the Asian population in Taiwan: A population based case-control study (P6.290)
Conclusions:This study suggests that microvascular complications are significant stroke predictors, with a greater involvement for ischemic stroke than for hemorrhagic stroke. Multiple microvascular complications interactively increase the stroke risk. Our study contributes to the identification of high-risk subjects for stroke prevention and adequate glycemic control.Disclosure: Dr. Chen has nothing to disclose. Dr. Lo has nothing to disclose. Malnutrition in Acute Stroke Patients Stratified by Stroke Severity- A Hospital Based Study.
CONCLUSION: Nutritional status was poor in stroke patients across all stroke severities within weeks. Further longitudinal outcome studies to identify the poor outcome and the evolution of nutritional status are warranted. PMID: 29468620 [PubMed - in process]

Prevalence of Stroke Risk Factors and Their Distribution Based on Stroke Subtypes in Gorgan: A Retrospective Hospital-Based Study-2015-2016.
Conclusion: Overall, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia were the major risk factors of stroke in Gorgan. Establishment of stroke registry (population- or hospital-based) for the province is recommended. PMID: 30147952 [PubMed]

Matrix metalloproteinase ‐9 gene polymorphisms are associated with ischemic stroke severity and early neurologic deterioration in patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsThe incidence of moderate or severe stroke and END was very common in acute IS patients with AF.MMP ‐9 polymorphisms were independently associated with severe stroke and higher risk of END, and prestroke antithrombotic treatment was associated with less severe stroke and lower risk of END in patients with AF.

Atrial Septal Aneurysm may Cause In-Hospital Recurrence of Cryptogenic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The CHALLENGE ESUS/CS registry indicated that ASA was not rare in cryptogenic stroke, and ASA's clinical characteristics included higher age, reduced frequency of diabetes mellitus, and increased frequency of concomitant right-to-left shunt. ASA may be related to in-hospital stroke recurrence in cryptogenic stroke. PMID: 32684557 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
