Atopic dermatitis and risk of hypertension, type-2 diabetes, myocardial infarction and stroke in a cross-sectional analysis from the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project.
CONCLUSIONS: We did not find evidence of a positive association between AD and subsequent hypertension, T2D, MI or stroke; AD was inversely associated with these outcomes in our study. Given our findings and the conflicting literature, AD is likely not a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Factors associated with stroke, myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease, unstable angina, or mortality in patients from real world clinical practice with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and early glycemic control.
CONCLUSIONS: Early and sustained HbA1c control between 6.5 and <7.0% is an important modifiable factor that helps reduce CV risk in patients with newly-diagnosed T2DM in real-world clinical practice. PMID: 29065729 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Omentin-1 is Associated with Carotid Plaque Instability among Ischemic Stroke Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Among ischemic stroke patients, higher omentin-1 levels were inversely associated with carotid plaque instability, but not associated with moderate-severe carotid stenosis or occlusion. Omentin-1 may represent a biomarker for predicting carotid plaque instability of acute ischemic stroke patients. PMID: 29225325 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of hemoglobin glycation index with outcomes of acute ischemic stroke in type 2 diabetic patients.
Conclusion Both low HGI and high HGI was associated with an increased risk of poor prognosis in diabetic patients with ischemic stroke, compared with moderate HGI. PMID: 29560815 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The initial glycemic variability is associated with early neurological deterioration in diabetic patients with acute ischemic stroke
This study attempted to explore whether initial glycemic variability increases END in diabetic patients with acute ischemic stroke. We enrolled type 2 diabetic patients undergoing acute ischemic stroke from November 2015 to November 2016. A total of 336 patients within 72  h from stroke onset were included. The serum glucose levels were checked four times per day during the initial 3 hospital days. The standard deviation of blood glucose (SDBG) values and the mean amplitude of glycemic excursions (MAGE) were calculated for glycemic variability. END was defined as an increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Sca...

Carotid calcifications in panoramic radiographs are associated with future stroke or ischemic heart diseases: a long-term follow-up study
ConclusionsEvidence of carotid calcifications in panoramic radiographs is associated with an event of stroke and/or ischemic heart diseases in 60 –96-year-old individuals.Clinical relevanceRadiographic evidence of carotid calcifications is associated with stroke and/or ischemic heart diseases. Patients with signs of carotid calcifications should therefore be referred for medical examination.

Cardiovascular risk of sitagliptin in ischemic stroke patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease: A nationwide cohort study
Limited data are available about the cardiovascular (CV) safety and efficacy of sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, in ischemic stroke patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Ischemic stroke patients with T2DM and CKD were selected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) from March 1, 2009 to December 31, 2011. A total of 1375 patients were divided into 2 age- and gender-matched groups: patients who received sitagliptin (n = 275; 20%) and those who did not (n = 1,100). Primary major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (M...

Association between hemoglobin A1c and acute ischemic stroke among patients with type-2 diabetes: a case-control study
ConclusionsOngoing surveillance of HbA1c among PTDs should be conducted alongside knowledge sharing of glycemic control and stroke prevention as an essential measure to prevent developing AIS risk.

Pioglitazone Use and Reduced Risk of Dementia in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus With a History of Ischemic Stroke
DISCUSSION: Pioglitazone use is associated with a lower risk of dementia in DM patients, particularly in those with a history of stroke or ischemic heart disease, suggesting the possibility of applying a personalized approach when choosing pioglitazone to suppress dementia in DM patients.PMID:36792375 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207069

Ischemic Stroke Management: Posthospitalization and Transition of Care
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Jul;108(1):70-77.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack exist on a continuum of the same disease process. Ischemic stroke is common, and more than 85% of stroke risk is attributed to modifiable risk factors. The initial management of acute stroke is usually performed in the emergency department and hospital settings. Family physicians have a key role in follow-up, ensuring that a complete diagnostic evaluation has been performed, addressing modifiable risk factors, facilitating rehabilitation, and managing chronic s...
