Young individuals with stroke in rehabilitation: a cohort study
Stroke in younger populations is a public health crisis and the prevalence is rising. Little is known about the progress of younger individuals with stroke in rehabilitation. Characterization of the course and speed of recovery is needed so that rehabilitation professionals can set goals and make decisions. This was a cohort study with data extracted from electronic medical records. Participants were 408 individuals diagnosed with stroke who participated in inpatient rehabilitation in an urban, academic medical center in the USA. The main predictor was age which was categorized as (18–44, 45–64, 65–74 and 75+). Outco...

Cardiovascular Event Rates in Statin-Treated Korean Patients with Cardiovascular Disease: Estimates from a Real-World Population Using Electronic Medical Record Data
ConclusionBy analyzing EMR data representing routine practice in Korea, we found that patients with very high-risk ASCVD were at substantial risk of further cardiovascular events in 3  years. Given the observed risk of recurrent events with suboptimal lipid management by statin, additional treatment to control LDL-C might be necessary to reduce the burden of further cardiovascular events for very high-risk ASCVD patients.

Taking a Chance to Recover: Families Look Back on the Decision to Pursue Tracheostomy After Severe Acute Brain Injury
ConclusionsAfter SABI, prognostic uncertainty almost transcends the concept of choice. Families who proceeded with a tracheostomy saw it as the only option at the time. High-quality communication may mitigate the stress surrounding this high-stakes decision.

Characterizing Intraoperative Vasopressor Use in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Retrospective Cohort Study
In conclusion, nearly 59% of patients undergoing TKA received intraoperative vasopressor support. History of stroke and older age were significantly associated with increased intraoperative vasopressor use. As the first study to examine vasopressor usage in a TKA patient population, we believe that understanding the association between patient characteristics and intraoperative vasopressor support will help orthopaedic surgeons select the appropriate surgical setting during preoperative optimization. Thomas Budd, Wai Hong Wilson Tang, James Abraham, Bo Xu, Chirag Shah, Rohit Moudgil, Zoran Popovic, Chris Watson, Leslie Cho, Mina Chung, Mohamed Kanj, Samir Kapadia, Brian Griffin, Lars Svensson, Patrick Collier, Feixiong Cheng BackgroundCardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in general population and the second leading cause of mortality and morbidity in cancer survivors after recurrent malignancy in the United States. The growing awareness of cancer therapy –related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) has led to an emerging field of cardio-oncology; yet, there is limited k...

E-131 Transfemoral versus transradial approach for cerebral angiography: A patient preference survey
ConclusionsAt our institution, most patients preferred transradial over transfemoral approach. Most common reasons included pain, recovery time and bruising. Although the effectiveness and safety of transradial approach for non-diagnostic neurointervention remains uncertain and continues to technically evolve, it may be the best option for diagnostic angiograms considering the patients’ preference.Disclosures J. Low Risk of Neurological Recurrence while Awaiting Carotid Endarterectomy: Results From a Danish Multicentre Study
CONCLUSION: In symptomatic carotid artery stenosis patients awaiting CEA, very few NRs occurred within 14 days. Institution of immediate BMT in specialised TIA/stroke units followed by early, but not necessarily urgent, CEA is a reasonable course of action in patients with high grade symptomatic carotid artery stenosis.PMID:34127375 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2021.04.016

Call Characteristics of Patients Suspected of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or Stroke During Out-of-Hours Service: A Comparison Between Men and Women
Conclusion: Overall, patient and call characteristics are mostly comparable between men and women, and these only modestly assist in identifying TIA/stroke. There were no gender differences in allocated urgencies after telephone triage in patients with TIA/stroke.

Brain and Lung Imaging Correlation in Patients with COVID-19: Could the Severity of Lung Disease Reflect the Prevalence of Acute Abnormalities on Neuroimaging? A Global Multicenter Observational Study ADULT BRAIN
CONCLUSIONS: The CT lung disease severity score may be predictive of acute abnormalities on neuroimaging in patients with COVID-19 with neurologic manifestations. This can be used as a predictive tool in patient management to improve clinical outcome.

Evaluation of Prescribing Practices and Outcomes Using Direct-Acting Oral Anticoagulants After Cardiac Surgery
Clin Ther. 2021 May 30:S0149-2918(21)00203-4. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2021.04.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Cardiac surgery patients frequently require anticoagulation. Warfarin remains the preferred agent, and a few trials have reported negative outcomes with the use of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in these patients. Therefore, limited literature exists that supports the dosing, safety, and efficacy of DOACs within the cardiac surgery population.METHODS: This single-center, retrospective analysis was conducted at a tertiary academic medical center. All data were extrapolated from electronic med...
