Stroke epidemiology in southern Brazil: Investigating the relationship between stroke severity, hospitalization costs, and health-related quality of life
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2022 Jun 13;94(2):e20211492. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202220211492. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTWe aimed with the present study to fill the gap on the performance and safety of stroke management and the costs related to hospitalizations, the relevant comorbidities associated with stroke patients, and the stroke patient outcomes health-related quality of life (HRQOL) progress. Our study investigated the clinical, neurological, and social impact of stroke in 220 patients in a tertiary hospital located in the countryside of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Description of clinical and neurological characteris...

Factors Affecting Interfacility Transport Intervals in Stroke Patients Transferred for Endovascular Therapy
Conclusions: At longer distances, rotor transport saved significant time specifically in the total IFT interval of patients with LVO strokes. Emphasizing processes to reduce the resource activation interval and the sending hospital interval may help reduce the overall time-to-EVT.PMID:35616919 | DOI:10.1080/10903127.2022.2082608

Identifying gaps in the management of atrial fibrillation with anticoagulation for stroke prevention (GIANTS): a quality improvement initiative
ConclusionsAwareness of this finding is critical to overcome therapeutic inertia in the use of DOACs for ischemic stroke patients with AF. With stroke care becoming increasingly nuanced, peripheral centers may lack the ability to guide anticoagulation in a timely and effective manner. Creation of tertiary short-term follow-up stroke clinics with cardiology follow-up may be an effective strategy to ensure standard of care. Research into systems contributors affecting the appropriate use of DOACs should be elucidated.

Relation of Hemoglobin A1C Levels to Risk of Ischemic Stroke and Mortality in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus and Atrial Fibrillation
This study aimed to assess the incidence and risks of ischemic stroke and mortality according to baseline HbA1c levels in patients with DM and AF. We conducted a cohort study using Clalit Health Services electronic medical records. The study population included all Clalit Health Services members aged ≥25 years, with the first diagnosis of AF between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2016, who had a diagnosis of DM.

Analysis of HLA Variants and Graves ’ Disease and Its Comorbidities Using a High Resolution Imputation System to Examine Electronic Medical Health Records
Hyperthyroidism is a prevalent endocrine disorder, and genetics play a major role in the development of thyroid-associated diseases. In particular, the inheritance of HLA has been demonstrated to induce the highest susceptibility to Graves’ disease (GD). However, thus far, no studies have reported the contribution of HLA to the development of GD and the complications that follow. Thus, in the present study, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time, a powerful imputation method, HIBAG, was used to predict the HLA subtypes among populations with available genome-wide SNP array data from the China Medical University...

Clinical Imaging-Derived Metrics of Corticospinal Tract Structural Integrity Are Associated With Post-stroke Motor Outcomes: A Retrospective Study
ConclusionsStudy findings revealed clinical MRI-derived CST lesion overlap was associated with PUE motor outcome post-stroke and that cortical projections within the CST, particularly those emanating from non-M1 cortical areas, prominently ventral premotor (PMv) and dorsal premotor (PMd) cortices, distinguished between PUE outcome groups. Exploratory predictive models using clinical MRI metrics, either alone or in combination with clinical measures, were able to accurately identify recovery outcome category for the study cohort during both the acute and early subacute phases of post-stroke recovery. Prospective studies are...
