Inpatient statin use and stroke recurrence in patients with or without diabetes mellitus.
Conclusion: Inpatient statin use was associated with lower stroke recurrence in non-diabetic patients after acute ischaemic stroke, but no definite association between inpatient statin use and stroke recurrence in patients with diabetes mellitus was found. Association between CPR-related genetic variants and risk of ischemic stroke: a nested case-control study.
Conclusions: Our study showed genetic variants of CRP-related genes were associated with risk of ischemic stroke. Our findings could provide useful data for the etiology of ischemic stroke. PMID: 31584351 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Validation and comparison of prognostic scales in Chinese patients with ischemic stroke: a prospective study from CATIS
CONCLUSION: : The ASTRAL score had higher efficacy than the SPAN-100 and THRIVE scores in predicting 2-year adverse outcomes among Chinese patients with ischemic stroke, suggesting that it could be a valuable risk assessment tool for the 2-year prognosis of such patients.PMID:34431455 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2021.1959775

Combined effects of family history of CVD and heart rate on ischemic stroke incidence among Inner Mongolians in China.
This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of family history of cardiovascular diseases (FHCVD) and heart rate on ischemic stroke incidence among Inner Mongolians in China. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted among 2589 participants aged 20 years and older from Inner Mongolia, China. The participants were divided into four groups according to status of FHCVD and heart rate and followed up from June 2002 to July 2012. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the combined effects of FHCVD and heart rate on the incidence of ischemic stroke. RESULTS: A total of 76 ischemic stroke occu...

Gender disparities and thrombolysis use among patient with first-ever ischemic stroke in Malaysia.
DISCUSSION: First-ever ischemic stroke incidence increased by 24.3 and 11.2% among female and male annually. There were distinct symptoms at hospital presentation between genders. All our patients discharged home regardless of genders. In summary, Malaysian female first-ever ischemic stroke was older, present with severe stroke, greater number of risk factors and poorer functional outcome and 30-day in-hospital mortality compared to male. PPARG gene C161T CT/TT associated with lower blood lipid levels and ischemic stroke from large-artery atherosclerosis in a Han population in Guangdong.
CONCLUSION: In this Han population, PPARG C161T CT/TT was associated with LAA ischemic stroke and lower levels of blood TC and LDL-C, but was not an independent risk factor for LAA ischemic stroke. PMID: 27264718 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Increased risk of post-stroke epilepsy in Chinese patients with a TRPM6 polymorphism.
CONCLUSION: The TRPM6 rs2274924 polymorphism may be associated with susceptibility to epilepsy following stroke, and the C allele may be associated with increased risk of post-stroke epilepsy. The TRPM6 rs2274924 polymorphism may also influence serum levels of Mg2+ in post-stroke epilepsy patients. PMID: 30739590 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Does the nutritional status of acute stroke patients affect the neurological status in the early post-stroke period?
Authors: Wierzbicki K, Horyniecki M, Mamak D, Szopa M, Buchała J, Stawarz G, Florek S, Adamczyk-Sowa M Abstract According to recent reports, malnutrition may be associated with a worse prognosis in stroke patients. The aim of this study was to determine the nutritional status of stroke patients and its impact on neurological and functional status of patients in the early post-stroke period. Our prospective study included a total of 128 patients admitted to the Stroke Unit. The assessment was made in the patients within the first week after the onset of stroke symptoms. Groups of patients with abnormal body mass in...

Inflammatory biomarkers and risk of ischemic stroke and subtypes: A 2-sample Mendelian randomization study.
Conclusions: Our study did not find convincing evidence to support that inflammatory biomarkers like IL-1Ra, sIL-6R and CRP are causally associated with the risk of ischemic stroke or its subtypes. PMID: 31900081 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Assessment of the manifestations of atrial fibrillation in patients with acute cerebral stroke - a single-center study based on 998 patients.
Discussion: The above data should prompt neurologists, cardiologists and family doctors to try to detect AF as a risk factor for ischemic stroke which worsens patient prognosis, prolongs hospital stay and contributes to increase in mortality, especially when more effective drug treatment is currently possible. Remote ischemic conditioning with exercise (RICE) promotes functional rehabilitation following ischemic stroke
Conclusions: RICE, a novel therapy that supplements RIC prior to exercise, is superiorly effective in inducing rehabilitation after stroke as compared to the traditional exercise monotherapy rehabilitation in rats with ischemic brain injury.PMID:34151756 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2021.1939489
