Stroke Incidence in Survivors of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in South Korea: A Population-Based Longitudinal Study.
CONCLUSIONS CO poisoning is a high-risk factor for the development of stroke, evidenced by high incidences of stroke after CO poisoning. Practical strategies for preventing stroke after CO poisoning are needed, because stroke after CO poisoning affects adults of almost all ages, significantly increasing their socioeconomic burden. The Association of Stage 1 Hypertension Defined by the 2017 ACC/AHA Guideline with Stroke and Its Subtypes among Elderly Chinese.
Conclusion: Among adults aged ≥60 years in rural China, stage 1 hypertension defined by 2017 American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association hypertension guideline was independently associated with the increased risk of all stroke and ischemic stroke, excluding hemorrhagic stroke. Assessment of the Implementation of Critical Pathway in Stroke Patients: A 10-Year Follow-Up Study.
Conclusion: The implementation of CP allows for better application of evidence- and guideline-based key interventions and helps to provide early, comprehensive, organized, and more specialized care to stroke patients. Despite limited evidence, CP is still recommended as a means of promoting best practices in hospital care for stroke patients. PMID: 32190659 [PubMed - in process]

Analysis of the Relationship between Adult Asthma and Stroke: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study Using the Korean National Sample Cohort.
Abstract Several previous studies demonstrated the risk of stroke in asthma patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke in asthma patients, independent of age, sex, income, region of residence, and past medical histories. The Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 through 2013 was used. Overall, 111,364 asthma patients ≥ 20 years old were matched to 111,364 control participants for age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Asthma was classified using ICD-10 codes (J45 and J46) an...

Prevalence of Stroke Cases in Warangal, Telangana Region, India: A Hospital-Based Case Study.
Authors: Susmitha K, Chandrasekhar V, Kiran G, Divya A, Rani GS, Sarangapani M Abstract Stroke is becoming a main cause of early death and disability in developing countries like India, and it is mostly enhanced by increased predominance of major risk factors. A detailed knowledge about the nature and magnitude of the stroke cases in this particular area is not only important for acute treatment but also it helps to prevent hospital admissions due to reoccurring stroke. The present study was conducted in the Department of Stroke at MGM Hospital, Warangal, India, to study the patterns of stroke admissions. All the c...

Early prediction and outcome of septic encephalopathy in acute stroke patients with nosocomial coma.
CONCLUSION: High fever and severe SIRS are two early predictors of stroke patients with SE, and survival rates were worse in stroke patients with SE than those without SE. PMID: 26015818 [PubMed]

Hypertension Among Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients in Northeast China: A Population-Based Study 2017-2019.
CONCLUSIONS The high prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension and high rates of blood pressure at stages 2 and 3 in patients with prior hemorrhagic stroke indicated a considerable stroke burden in northeast China. Therefore, effective and long-time management of hypertension in stroke survivors should be a priority. PMID: 33376232 [PubMed - in process]

Association of intermittent versus continuous hemodialysis modalities with mortality in the setting of acute stroke among patients with end-stage renal disease
Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are 8–10 times more likely to suffer from a stroke compared with the general public. Despite this risk, there are minimal data elucidating which hemodialysis modality is best for patients with ESRD following a stroke, and guidelines for their management are lacking. We retrospectively queried the US Renal Data System administrative database for all-cause mortality in ESRD stroke patients who received either intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) or continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Acute ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke were identified using the International Cla...

Investigation of Factors That Affect the Quality of Life After a Stroke
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2023;1425:437-442. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-31986-0_42.ABSTRACTStroke, as a disease, describes a group of disorders characterized by the presence of central nervous system symptoms either as a result of ischemia (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). The appearance of a stroke results in a permanent physical or cognitive disability. The stroke incidence is the third cause of death after heart disease and cancer, and is the main cause of long-term disability. The effects of a stroke on a patient's daily life, and hence on his quality of life, are intense and long-lasting. These include memory pro...

Improving the one-year mortality of stroke patients: an 18-year observation in a teaching hospital.
This study determined the one-year survival rate and prognostic factors of hospitalized hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke patients from 1991 to 2008 in a teaching hospital in Taiwan. We also evaluated the improvements in the one-year mortality after stroke during an 18-year study period. Patients admitted for cerebral hemorrhage (n = 3,678) and cerebral infarction (n = 16,010), identified from an in-patient electronic database, were linked to the National Death Registry of Taiwan. Actuarial analysis was used to determine the one-year survival rates, and Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to investigate the pre...

Real-World Evidence of Stroke Prevention in Patients with Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation in the United States: the REVISIT-US Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Rivaroxaban and apixaban were associated with less ICH than warfarin and both are likely associated with reductions in the combined endpoint. Further investigation to validate the numerically higher rate of ischemic stroke with apixaban versus warfarin is required. PMID: 27633045 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
