NF ‑κB/IκBα signaling pathways are essential for resistance to heat stress‑induced ROS production in pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells
Mol Med Rep. 2021 Nov;24(5):814. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2021.12454. Epub 2021 Sep 24.ABSTRACTThe results of a previous study demonstrated that heat stress (HS) triggered oxidative stress, which in turn induced the apoptosis of epithelial cells. These results uncovered a novel mechanism underlying the activation of NF‑κB in primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The present study aimed to further investigate the role of NF‑κB/IκBα signaling pathways in the inhibition of HS‑induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cytotoxicity in endothelial cells. The results of the present study demonstrated that H...

Silencing of PFKFB3 protects podocytes against high glucose ‑induced injury by inducing autophagy
In conclusion, silencing of PFKFB3 may protect podocytes from HG‑induced injury by inducing autophagy. Therefore, PFKFB3 may serve as a potential target for treatment of DN.PMID:34490476 | DOI:10.3892/mmr.2021.12405

Alcohol inhibits alveolar fluid clearance through the epithelial sodium channel via the A2 adenosine receptor in acute lung injury
In conclusion, the results of the present study demonstrated that chronic alcohol consumption worsened lung injury by aggravating pulmonary edema and impairing AFC. An alcohol‑induced decrease of α‑ENaC, β‑ENaC and γ‑ENaC expression levels by the A2AR‑mediated cAMP pathway may be responsible for the exacerbated effects of chronic alcohol consumption in lung injury.PMID:34396442 | DOI:10.3892/mmr.2021.12364

Inhibition of lncRNA < em > SNHG8 < /em > plays a protective role in  hypoxia-ischemia-reoxygenation-induced myocardial injury by regulating miR-335 and RASA1 expression
Mol Med Rep. 2021 Aug;24(2):597. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2021.12236. Epub 2021 Jun 24.ABSTRACTLong non‑coding (lnc)RNAs serve a role in a number of diseases, including different types of cancer and acute myocardial infarction. The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective role of lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 8 (SNHG8) in hypoxia‑ischemia‑reoxygenation (HI/R)‑induced myocardial injury and its potential mechanism of action. Cell viability, proliferation, creatine kinase myocardial band, cell apoptosis and protein expression levels were determined by Cell Counting Kit‑8 assay, EdU assay, ELISA, flo...

Tripterygium glycoside suppresses epithelial ‑to‑mesenchymal transition of diabetic kidney disease podocytes by targeting autophagy through the mTOR/Twist1 pathway
Mol Med Rep. 2021 Aug;24(2):592. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2021.12231. Epub 2021 Jun 24.ABSTRACTTripterygium glycoside (TG) is a traditional Chinese medicine extract with immunosuppressive, anti‑inflammatory and anti‑renal fibrosis effects. Epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell apoptosis are considered to be the major cause of podocyte injury in diabetic kidney disease (DKD). However, it remains unknown as to whether TG is able to alleviate podocyte injury to prevent DKD progression. Therefore, the present study aimed to clarify the podocyte protective effects of TG on DKD. TG, Twist1 small interfering RNA (siRNA) ...

Effects of sterol derivatives in cationic liposomes on  biodistribution and gene-knockdown in the lungs of mice systemically injected with siRNA lipoplexes
Mol Med Rep. 2021 Aug;24(2):598. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2021.12237. Epub 2021 Jun 24.ABSTRACTCationic liposomes can be intravenously injected to deliver short interfering (si)RNAs into the lungs. The present study investigated the effects of sterol derivatives in systemically injected siRNA/cationic liposome complexes (siRNA lipoplexes) on gene‑knockdown in the lungs of mice. Cationic liposomes composed of 1,2‑dioleoyl‑3‑trimethylammonium‑propane or dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DDAB) were prepared as a cationic lipid, with sterol derivatives such as cholesterol (Chol), β‑sitosterol, ergosterol (Ergo) or stig...
