Phase-transited lysozyme nanofilm with co-immobilized copper ion and heparin as cardiovascular stent multifunctional coating
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2023 Sep 2;230:113530. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2023.113530. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular metal stents have shown potential in the treatment of coronary artery disease using percutaneous coronary intervention. However, thrombosis, endothelialization, and new atherosclerosis after stent implantation remain unsolved problems. Herein, a multifunctional coating material based on phase-transited lysozyme was developed to promote stent endothelialization and simultaneously reduce thrombus events by embedding moieties of heparin and co-immobilized copper ions for in-situ catalyzing ni...

Atypical Varicella-Zoster Virus Reactivation: A Case Report
Eur J Case Rep Intern Med. 2023 Aug 11;10(9):003945. doi: 10.12890/2023_003945. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTVaricella-zoster virus (VZV) commonly causes benign skin manifestations in children; it then establishes a latent infection and may reactivate, causing herpes zoster. The most common zoster complication is postherpetic neuralgia, but complications can also occur without a rash. VZV infection may cause neurological manifestations and even vasculopathy may occur, in both primary and reactivated VZV infection. Thrombotic complications are mainly described in children, while a few case reports have described cerebral venous...

Cell salvage for minimising perioperative allogeneic blood transfusion in adults undergoing elective surgery
CONCLUSIONS: In some types of elective surgery, cell salvage may reduce the need for and volume of allogeneic transfusion, alongside evidence of no difference in adverse events, when compared to no cell salvage. Further research is required to establish why other surgeries show no benefit from CS, through further analysis of the current evidence. More large RCTs in under-reported specialities are needed to expand the evidence base for exploring the impact of CS.PMID:37681564 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD001888.pub5

Thromboembolism in nephrotic syndrome: controversies and uncertainties
Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2023 Aug 9;7(6):102162. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2023.102162. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTThromboembolism is one of the most serious complications of nephrotic syndrome, including both arterial and venous thromboembolic events. Rates of thromboembolism depend on a multitude of factors, including the severity and cause of nephrotic syndrome, with primary membranous nephropathy having the highest reported rates. In relation to arterial thromboembolism, the risk can be as high as 8 times that of an age- and sex-matched population. However, extrapolating risks is challenging, with published studies not be...

Low-dose non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in patients with atrial fibrillation
Korean J Intern Med. 2023 Sep;38(5):583-594. doi: 10.3904/kjim.2023.035. Epub 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTIn the last decade, non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs), a new generation of OACs, were introduced to prevent thromboembolism in patients with atrial fibrillation. Although vitamin K-dependent anticoagulants have long been used as OACs, their inherent disadvantage of considerable bleeding complications has limited their use. NOACs demonstrate similar or superior clinical outcomes to those of warfarin. Although strict dose reduction criteria are recommended for NOACs, low-dose NOACs are frequently utilized, espe...
