Clinical Utility of Sero-Immunological Responses Against SARS-CoV-2 Nucleocapsid Protein During Subsequent Prevalence of Wild-Type, Delta Variant, and Omicron Variant
In conclusion, nucleocapsid antibody provides instructive clues about the immunogenicity of nucleocapsid proteins by different seroconversion rates and titers according to the severity of infection, host immune status, and different variants of concern.PMID:37724496 | PMC:PMC10506902 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e292

Salivette ® Cortisol versus oropharyngeal swabbing for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection
CONCLUSIONS: The SC may be an alternative for SARS-CoV-2 detection where naso/oropharyngeal swabbing is not feasible/available. This technique also confirms observations that the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in the upper airway may vary due to viral load over the disease course.TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT04599959.PMID:37724431 | DOI:10.1080/14737159.2023.2260308

Effect of interferon- α on COVID-19 in-hospital mortality: a large-scale propensity score-matched study
CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that subcutaneous administration of IFN-α, with or without remdesivir, does not have any significant impact on COVID-19 mortality and ICU admission. Future clinical trials considering the time, subtype, and form of IFN-α administration are warranted to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of IFN-α on COVID-19.PMID:37724852 | DOI:10.1684/ecn.2023.0485

Dietary Supplement Use among Iranian Households during COVID ‑19 Epidemic Lockdown: Less Access in Those Who May Need More National Food and Nutrition Surveillance
Conclusions: During epidemic lockdown, DS use was remarkably increased among the Iranian households. Apart from the debatable usefulness of DSs against COVID‑19, the inverse association of DS use with a household’s income and provincial food security well indicates inequity in accessibility to DS. Actions to improve the nutritional status of the under‑privileged populations including targeted supplementation are strongly recommended.

Long ‑Term Mental Health Research Needed for COVID‑19 Healthcare Workers in Mexico
Dear Editor, The first recorded case of coronavirus disease (COVID ‑19) in Mexico was on January 3, 2020. Since then, there have been 2,861,498 confirmed cases and 241,279 recorded deaths as of August 4, 2021.[1] This unprecedented situation has put considerable strain on health systems around the world. By September 2020, Mexico ranked number one in healthcare w orker (HCW) deaths due to COVID‑19 at 1,320, despite having a much lower COVID‑19 incidence in the general population than other countries.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Development of COVID ‑19 Vaccine
Dear Editor, The coronavirus disease ‑2019 (COVID‑19) pandemic is a phenomenon that has infected and killed many people in many countries. Vaccination has been suggested as a good way to fight COVID‑19, and it is certainly important to design a safe and effective vaccine. In the healthcare system, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as an effective tool. The use of AI in diagnosing various health conditions and interpreting complex medical issues is very significant. AI capabilities can be used as an effective tool to study SARS‑CoV‑2 and its capabilities, virulence, and genome. For example, machine learning...

Nonclinical safety assessment of an mRNA Covid ‐19 vaccine candidate following repeated administrations and biodistribution
AbstractMessenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines have demonstrated efficacy against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) in humans. mRNA technology holds tremendous potential for rapid control and prevention of emergencies due to its flexibility with respect to production, application, and design for an efficacious and safe use in humans. We assessed the toxicity and biodistribution of MRT5500, an mRNA vaccine encoding for the full-length of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and delivered by lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) containing a novel ionizable lipid, Lipid-1 in preclinical animal models. In the repeated dose tox...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1952: Real-World Experience of the Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Combination Therapy with Remdesivir and Monoclonal Antibodies versus Remdesivir Alone for Patients with Mild-to-Moderate COVID-19 and Immunosuppression: A Retrospective Single-Center Study in Aichi, Japan
Hiroshige Mikamo The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic continues to threaten global public health. Remdesivir and monoclonal antibodies have shown promise for COVID-19 treatment of patients who are immunocompromised, including those with cancer, transplant recipients, and those with autoimmune disorder. However, the effectiveness and safety of this combination therapy for patients who are immunosuppressed remain unclear. We compared the efficacy and safety of combination therapy and remdesivir monotherapy for patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 who were immunosuppressed. Eighty-six patients treated in July 2...

Correspondence on 'Clinical course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a series of 17 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus under long-term treatment with hydroxychloroquine
Mathian et al described the clinical course and heterogeneity of COVID-19 in 17 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients.1 SLE subjects could be at higher risk of developing COVID-19, with more severe symptomatology and need for hospitalisation due to multiple underlying risk factors.1 2 Type-I interferons (IFN), including IFNα, play fundamental roles in immunity and are crucial in antiviral responses.3 Defects in IFN signalling pathways, secondary to monogenic inborn errors or to blocking autoantibodies, promote immunodeficiency and recurrent infections.4 5 Dysregulation in type-I IFN pathway also plays key patho...

A pediatric case series of catastrophic gastrointestinal complications of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disease with increasing incidence, high association with coronavirus disease 2019, higher mortality, and a plea for early endoscopy to prevent late fatal outcome
ConclusionSince 80% of our patients had exposure to coronavirus, a potential relationship might be suggested between the two. Furthermore, as we witnessed in one case, urgent endoscopic investigation in immunocompromised patients presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms can improve the clinical outcomes and therefore should be considered for early diagnosis of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder.
