Is It Allergies, The Flu Or The Coronavirus? How To Tell The Difference
(CNN) — The coronavirus has infected more than 100,000 people worldwide. With all of the news of event cancellations, empty flights and health precautions (wash your hands!), it’s natural that people may get a little anxious every time they feel a tickle in their throat or the beginnings of a bad cough. While the coronavirus is certainly something to take seriously, the chances of any individual person getting it are still low. But if you’re wondering whether that stuffy nose could end up being a worst case scenario, CNN talked to Dr. Greg Poland, a professor of medicine and Infectious diseases at the May...

Credit: UN News/Li ZhangBy Ifeanyi NsoforABUJA, Mar 9 2020 (IPS) Recently, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said, “We have an epidemic caused by Coronavirus, but we have a pandemic caused by fear “. This fear is worsened by how news agencies report the outbreak. These are some examples. “Bodies ‘pile up’ in morgue as Iran feels strain of coronavirus” – CNN “First UK death from coronavirus confirmed as cases surge to 115” – The Guardian UK “Coronavirus: Global death toll exceeds 3,000” – Premium Times Nigeria “Death toll from coronavirus in Italy rises to 148: Live updates” ...

Lessons from Nigeria in Responding to Coronavirus
By Ifeanyi NsoforABUJA, Mar 20 2020 (IPS) Coronavirus is now a pandemic and the World Health Organization considers Europe as its new epicenter. Italy, Spain and France are on lockdown and several nations are banning travelers from countries where cases are on the rise. But it’s a problem beyond Europe too, and governments in 61 countries have closed schools to slow the spread of the virus. In the U.S., President Trump recently declared a national emergency after the virus had spread to nearly every U.S. state, and he urged state governments to set up emergency operation centers immediately. Most of these measur...

Logan Airport Not Currently Screening Passengers For Coronavirus
BOSTON (CBS/CNN) – A new Chinese coronavirus, a cousin of the SARS virus, has infected more than 200 people since the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December. Boston’s Logan Airport is not currently screening passengers for the illness, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection told WBZ-TV. That’s because there are no direct flights to Boston from that region. Additional health screening for coronavirus is in place at JFK Airport in New York, San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. The agency said the CDC has determined that coronavirus presents a low risk to the American pu...

Coronavirus: Debunking Myths And Misinformation
(CNN) — As the novel coronavirus — and panic about the coronavirus — continues to spread around the world, so too are bogus claims, conspiracy theories and misinformation about the disease. There’s so much inaccurate information floating around out there that the World Health Organization is calling it an “infodemic.” In perhaps the clearest sign of the times, WHO has joined TikTok to help set the record straight. Read: Coronavirus – What You Should And Shouldn’t Do The myths exist both on the fringes of the internet and in more mainstream outlets. And while social media platforms a...

‘If We Don’t Work, We Don’t Get Paid.’ How the Coronavirus Is Exposing Inequality Among America’s Workers
There are many things that worry Fina Kao about working in a busy donut shop in an age of fear about a spreading virus. The elderly customer who shuffles across the brown linoleum floor of the shop, orders a glazed donut, and then coughs. The parents sitting at a table sharing a breakfast sandwich as their small child touches the tables and the floor and the drinks fridge with her dirty fingers. The regulars who come in speaking Mandarin, who Kao knows travel annually to China—one of whom proceeds to sit at the window and cut his fingernails. The fact that California now has 43 confirmed cases of coronavirus, more th...

‘There Has to Be a Plan.’ For Relatives of Nursing Home Residents, Anger and Worry as the Coronavirus Spreads
Kevin Connolly says his father-in-law credits the Life Care Center of Kirkland, Washington with “giving him his life back.” It’s where he recovered from hospice care, flirted with nurses and enjoyed eating chicken pot pie. But now, it’s where Connolly worries the 81-year-old will die because of what he says has been a bungled response to the coronavirus outbreak that has devastated the nursing home facility, which is linked to at least 13 of the 19 coronavirus deaths that had been reported in the U.S. as of Sunday morning. “I can no longer sit around and wait for a phone call to tell me my lo...

How the Stoics Can Keep Us Calm During the Coronavirus Outbreak
As a psychiatrist, I have seen dozens of patients who suffer from Panic Disorder — a biologically-based condition that can cause immense distress and incapacity for the affected person. But the kind of panic that is spreading in reaction to the Coronavirus outbreak has the potential to cause distress and incapacity on a world-wide scale — unless we all “get a grip.” It turns out that the ancient philosophy of Stoicism may be just what the world needs to calm down.  When we hear the term “stoic” many of us think of the phrase “keeping a stiff upper lip” or picture that famously stoical character fro...

Coronavirus Crisis: Trump Announces New Face Mask Recommendations
WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Donald Trump announced new guidance from the White House on Friday afternoon, saying the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were advising the use of “non-medical cloth based” face coverings. But he emphasized the recommendations were voluntary and that he, for one, would not partake. “I don’t think I’m going to be doing it,” he said. After weeks of insisting Americans should not wear face masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus — and even suggesting their use could increase the chance of infection — administration officials thi...

Dartmouth College Student Says Winston, First Dog Positive For Coronavirus, Is ‘ Completely Fine ’
BOSTON (CBS) – A Dartmouth College student said he and his family were as surprised as anyone when their pug Winston became the first known dog to test positive for coronavirus. Ben McLean returned home to North Carolina March 10, and remained there after Dartmouth was among the colleges switching to close its campus and shift to remote learning as a result of the pandemic. McLean’s father, a doctor working at UNC Medical Center’s COVID-19 emergency room, became sick in mid-March and later tested positive for coronavirus. McLean’s mother tested positive as well, and though the Dartmouth College student himself was ...

But the risk to Massachusetts residents is low, the state’s Department of Public Health said Wednesday. “The risk to Massachusetts residents from this novel coronavirus is currently low, however, this is the season for respiratory viruses including the flu and many of the same recommended precautions apply to coronaviruses,” a spokeswoman for the department told WBZ-TV.
