The impact of COVID-19 infection before the vaccination era on the hospitalized patients requiring hemodialysis: a single-center retrospective cohort
Ren Fail. 2023;45(2):2251593. doi: 10.1080/0886022X.2023.2251593. Epub 2023 Sep 21.ABSTRACTDue to effective vaccinations, the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) infection that caused the pandemic has a milder clinical course. We aimed to assess the mortality of hospitalized COVID-19 patients before the vaccination era. We investigated the mortality in those patients between 1 October 2020 and 31 May 2021 who received hemodialysis treatment [patients with previously normal renal function (nCKD), patients with chronic kidney disease previously not requiring hemodialysis (CKDnonHD), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and patients...

Effects of pulmonary rehabilitation in survivors of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Role of vaccination
Monaldi Arch Chest Dis. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.4081/monaldi.2023.2738. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSurvivors of severe COVID-19 requiring hospital admission may suffer from short- and long-term sequelae, including disability and reduced physical performance. Vaccination and pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) are effective tools against COVID-19 effects. While the beneficial effect of each of these treatments is known, there are no data about their combined effect. In people admitted to PR hospitals after severe COVID-19 disease, we retrospectively analyzed whether PR outcome might be influenced by vaccination status. Ninety-six...

The role of Pannexin-1 channels, ATP, and purinergic receptors in the pathogenesis of HIV and SARS-CoV-2
Curr Opin Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 19;73:102404. doi: 10.1016/j.coph.2023.102404. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInfectious agents such as human immune deficiency virus-1 (HIV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) use host proteins to infect, replicate, and induce inflammation within the host. A critical component of these diseases is the axis between pannexin-1 channels, extracellular ATP, and purinergic receptors. Here, we describe the potential therapeutic role of Pannexin-1/purinergic approaches to prevent or reduce the devastating consequences of these pathogens.PMID:37734241 | DOI:10.1016/j.coph.2023.102404

Critical care, maternal and neonatal outcomes of pregnant women with COVID ‐19 admitted to eight intensive care units during the wildtype, alpha and delta waves of the pandemic across the North West of England—a retrospective review
ConclusionsOf the women admitted to ICU antepartum, 40% were discharged while remaining pregnant and 60% had expedited delivery. Antepartum women who were discharged from ICU without giving birth may receive lower rates of mechanical ventilation than those who delivered in ICU or admitted postpartum; however, further studies are needed to confirm or refute this association.

The nutritional impact of COVID-19 during hospital admission: a cross-sectional survey
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is now recognised to impact the body in a broad variety of ways, including the negative impact on nutritional status. Identification of nutritional risk and consideration of nutrition support should be fundamental in this patient group1. The aim of the present survey was to characterise the nutritional impact of COVID-19 on patients hospitalised during the first wave of the pandemic.

The effect of SARS-CoV-2 on the development of Parkinson's disease: the role of α-synuclein
AbstractThe current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can lead to various neurological complications in infected people. These neurological effects include problems in both central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). Hyposmia, a PNS symptom of COVID-19, frequently manifests in the early stages of Parkinson's disease (PD) and serves as an early warning sign of the condition. In addition, the olfactory system is recognized as an early site for the onset of α-synuclein pathology, the pathological hallmark of PD. PD is characterized by accumulation and aggregation of misfolded α-synuclein (α-Syn) int...
