NLRP2 in health and disease
Immunology. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1111/imm.13699. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNLR family pyrin domain containing 2 (NLRP2) is a novel member of the Nod-like receptor (NLR) family. However, our understanding of NLRP2 has long been ambiguous. NLRP2 may have a role in the innate immune response, but its 'specific' functions remain controversial. Although NLRP2 can initiate inflammasome and promote inflammation, it can also downregulate inflammatory signals. Additionally, NLRP2 has been reported to function in the reproductive system and shows high expression in the placenta. However, the exact role of NLRP2 in the reproducti...

PPP1R12C Promotes Atrial Hypocontractility in Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with AF exhibit increased levels of PPP1R12C protein compared with controls. PPP1R12C overexpression in mice increases PP1c targeting to MLC2a and causes MLC2a dephosphorylation, which reduces atrial contractility and increases AF inducibility. These findings suggest that PP1 regulation of sarcomere function at MLC2a is a key determinant of atrial contractility in AF.PMID:37737016 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.123.322516

The prevalence and prognosis of asymptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis in a community-based population: Results based on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging
CONCLUSIONS: We found that ICAD detected using HR-MRI increases the long-term risk of a first-ever ischemic stroke in a stroke-free population, suggesting that the current primary prevention protocol of stroke awaits further optimization.PMID:37738517 | DOI:10.1111/ene.16057

Low-density lipoprotein subclasses over the menopausal transition and risk of coronary calcification and carotid atherosclerosis: the SWAN Heart and HDL ancillary studies
CONCLUSIONS: During the MT, women experience significant increases in LDL subclasses found to be related to greater cIMT levels and CAC prevalence. Whether these changes could better predict future risk of hard cardiovascular disease events beyond LDL-C remains a research question to address.PMID:37738035 | DOI:10.1097/GME.0000000000002245

Assembling the anaerobic gamma-butyrobetaine to TMA metabolic pathway in < em > Escherichia fergusonii < /em > and confirming its role in TMA production from dietary < em > L- < /em > carnitine in murine models
mBio. 2023 Sep 22:e0093723. doi: 10.1128/mbio.00937-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is a major pro-atherogenic and pro-thrombotic metaorganismal molecule produced through the initial conversion of the dietary L-carnitine and other precursors into trimethylamine (TMA). We recently identified a dual-microbe anaerobic pathway for the metabolism of L-carnitine into TMA, in which the widely distributed cai operon in Enterobacteriaceae converts L-carnitine into gamma-butyrobetaine (γBB), followed by the degradation of γBB into TMA by the relatively rare gamma-butyrobetaine utilization (gbu) gene...

Looking beyond the surface: Muir Torre syndrome
Arch Clin Cases. 2023 Sep 20;10(3):119-122. doi: 10.22551/2023.40.1003.10255. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTMuir-Torre Syndrome (MTS) is associated with multiple visceral malignancies. Initial presentation may be a benign skin tumor mimicking a sebaceous cyst. This case report highlights the importance of early diagnosis, genetic testing, and multidisciplinary screening. A 67-year-old man was diagnosed with MTS following excision of a skin lesion (sebaceoma). He was declined both screening colonoscopy and genetic testing. Subsequently, advanced colon cancer was found following presentation with iron deficiency anemia, which ult...
