Impairment of oocyte maturation as a mechanism of decreased fecundity in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) exposed to the brominated flame retardant, 1,2,5,6-tetrabromocyclooctane (TBCO)
Aquat Toxicol. 2023 Sep 11;263:106695. doi: 10.1016/j.aquatox.2023.106695. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInhibition of oocyte maturation is an understudied mechanism by which chemical stressors can impair fecundity of female fishes. The primary objective of the present study was to develop an assay to assess oocyte maturation disruption by chemical stressors in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). First, an in vitro assay to assess maturation inducing hormone (MIH)-stimulated oocyte maturation in zebrafish was validated for use with Japanese medaka. Next, using the brominated flame retardant, 1,2,5,6-tetrabromocyclooctane (T...

Seizure-related stress and arousal responses mediate a relationship between anxiety trait and state in epilepsy
CONCLUSIONS: These findings elucidate the epilepsy-specific stress and arousal characteristics and their roles in mediating traits and state anxiety. These results may reflect the long-term clinical course and unique emotion recognition tendencies in epilepsy.PMID:37716325 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109442

Making sense of flavivirus non-strctural protein 1 in innate immune evasion and inducing tissue-specific damage
Virus Res. 2023 Sep 16;336:199222. doi: 10.1016/j.virusres.2023.199222. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFlaviviruses include medically important mosquito-borne pathogens, such as Zika virus (ZIKV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), dengue virus (DENV) and West Nile virus (WNV), that cause hundreds of millions of infections each year. Currently, there are no approved effect therapies against mosquito-borne flaviviruses. The flaviviruses encoded nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) is a secreted glycoprotein widely involved in viral replication, immune evasion, and directly causing tissue-specific damage during flaviviruses infectio...

Periodontal Tissue Regeneration by Transplantation of Autologous Adipose Tissue-Derived Multi-Lineage Progenitor Cells With Carbonate Apatite
In this study, we selected carbonate apatite as a candidate scaffold material for ADMPCs and conducted an in vitro examination of its effect on the cellular function of ADMPCs. We further performed autologous ADMPC transplantation with carbonate apatite as the scaffold material in a model of one-wall bone defects in beagles and then analyzed the effect on periodontal tissue regeneration. The findings showed that carbonate apatite did not affect the cell morphology of ADMPCs and that it promoted proliferation. Moreover, no effect on secretor factor transcription was found. The results of the in vivo analysis confirmed the s...

Comprehensive genomic profiling of Japanese patients with thoracic malignancies: A single-center retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: The CGP panel could identify genetic alterations, thereby facilitating genomically-matched therapy, even in patients with thoracic malignancies who could not be identified using multiplex gene-panel testing.PMID:37714093 | DOI:10.1016/j.resinv.2023.08.005

Effect of dominant vertebral artery angle on basilar artery curvature and plaque
CONCLUSIONS: The dominant VA angle was independently associated with BA plaque, and a dominant VA angle greater than 80° may be a marker for a high risk of posterior circulation atherosclerosis.PMID:37711832 | PMC:PMC10498226 | DOI:10.21037/qims-23-74

The future of green transportation: evaluating the impact of innovation in hybrid electric vehicles relating technologies on carbon dioxide emissions in Asia's top knowledge-based economies
This study attempts to address this gap in the literature by investigating the association between innovation in IHVRTs and CO2e in the top three Asian knowledge-based economies, with independent variables gross domestic product per capita (GDPPC), economic complexity (ECC), renewable energy consumption (RNEC), and financial development (FD). The model's coefficients are estimated using the augmented mean group, which considers cross-country dependencies and country-specific effects. The empirical findings indicate that IHVRTs have a substantial negative effect on CO2e. In addition, FD has a favorable relationship with CO2...

Decision tree analysis accurately predicts discharge destination after spinal cord injury rehabilitation
CONCLUSIONS: D-CART and A-CART showed comparable prediction accuracies. This suggests that, even during the early stages of rehabilitation, it is possible to predict the discharge destination.PMID:37714507 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2023.08.010

Functional outcome prediction after spinal cord injury using ensemble machine learning
CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that functional prognostication could be achieved using machine-learning methods with features present at the time of rehabilitation admission. Goals can be set at the beginning of rehabilitation. Moreover, our model can be utilized to evaluate advanced medical treatments, such as regenerative medicine.PMID:37714506 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2023.08.011
