Immunoproteomic identification of allergenic proteins in pecan (Carya illinoinensis) pollen
This study has identified 17 IgE binding proteins from pecan pollen including proteins widely recognized as allergens and panallergens. These findings will contribute to develop specific diagnosis and treatment of pecan pollen allergy. SIGNIFICANCE: Pecan is a tree highly valued for its fruits that have a great commercial value. To date three pecan seed storage proteins have been officially recognized by the WHO/IUIS allergen nomenclature subcommittee as food allergens (Car i 1, Car i 2 and Car i 4). Pecan tree pollen is highly allergenic and a clinically relevant cause of allergies in North America (USA and Mexico) and re...

Does moisturising baby skin prevent eczema or food allergies?
Skin care treatments in babies, such as using moisturisers on the skin during the first year of life, probably do not stop them from developing eczema, and probably increase the chance of skin infection. The authors are uncertain how skin care treatments might affect the chances of developing a food allergy. We need evidence from well-conducted studies to determine effects of skin care on food allergies in babies. What are allergies? An immune response is how the body recognises and defends itself against substances that appear harmful. An allergy is a reaction of the body ' s immune system to a particular food or substance (...

Donor-conceived adults have higher incidence of immunology diseases
(Flinders University) Adults conceived through sperm donation reported higher frequencies of allergies, type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune conditions. Donor sperm conceived adults had seven times more type 1 diabetes diagnoses; double the incidence of thyroid disease, acute bronchitis and sleep apnoea; and 10% more reported allergies. The study looked at 272 donor-conceived adult participants compared to 877 conceived naturally, from around the world with most from Australia, US, UK, Belgium and Netherlands.

Inventory of the Recommendations for Patients with Pollen Allergies and Evaluation of Their Scientific Relevance
Pollens are responsible for allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. The incidence of these diseases, which have adversely impacted the social and professional lives of people who are allergic to pollen, has tripled in the past 25 years. Official institutes, health care institutions, public interest groups, and mainstream news media provide people who are allergic to pollen with advice aimed at reducing their symptoms. The aim of this work was to provide an inventory of the prevention guidelines in the world and to evaluate their scientific relevance. A PubMed search was carried out using specific keywords. The scien...

IJERPH, Vol. 17, Pages 5828: Associations of Preconception Exposure to Air Pollution and Greenness with Offspring Asthma and Hay Fever
nson Andrei Malinovschi Alessandro Marcon Torben Sigsgaard Cecilie Svanes Ane Johannessen We investigated if greenness and air pollution exposure in parents’ childhood affect offspring asthma and hay fever, and if effects were mediated through parental asthma, pregnancy greenness/pollution exposure, and offspring exposure. We analysed 1106 parents with 1949 offspring (mean age 35 and 6) from the Respiratory Health in Northern Europe, Spain and Australia (RHINESSA) generation study. Mean particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), black carbon (BC), ozone (O3) (µg/m...

Change in exhaled nitric oxide during peanut challenge is related to severity of reaction
Peanut allergy affects 3% of Australian children and has a higher risk of anaphylaxis than most food allergies. Predicting who is likely to develop anaphylaxis is still an inexact science. The fraction of exha...

Recent Surveys on Food Allergy Prevalence
Substantial numbers of children and adults report having immunoglobulin E–mediated food allergies. However, generating accurate food allergy prevalence data is difficult. Self-reported data can overestimate prevalence when compared with prevalence estimates established by more rigorous methods. As of 2004, in the United States, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act mandated that the label should declare the source of the food if the product contains that food or a protein-containing ingredient from that food (not all proteins in a major food allergen cause allergic reactions) in the manner described by t...

Whole cell pertussis vaccination and decreased risk of IgE-mediated food allergy: a nested case-control study
ConclusionsAustralian infants who received wP vaccines were less likely to be diagnosed with food allergy in childhood than contemporaneous children who received aP vaccines. If a protective effect is confirmed in a randomised controlled trial, wP or mixed wP and aP vaccination schedules could form part of an effective strategy for combatting the rise in food allergies.

The burden of antibiotic allergies in adults in an Australian intensive care unit: the BASIS study.
CONCLUSION: Patients with AALs had twice the odds of receiving intravenous vancomycin and half the odds of receiving narrow spectrum β-lactams, which highlights the continued need for antimicrobial stewardship initiatives. PMID: 31778633 [PubMed - in process]

This Under-Utilized Drug Is Actually Critical for Treatment-Resistant Depression
Many people with clinical depression have tried an array of medication and still feel sick. Maybe they’ve tried different selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Maybe they’ve taken these antidepressants along with an antipsychotic (a common strategy to boost effectiveness). Either way, the lack of improvement can make individuals feel even more hopeless and fear the darkness will never lift. If this sounds all-too familiar, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, up to 30 percent of people with depression don’t respond to the first few antidepressants ...
