Exiting the Cave: Exploring the Transition From Paleolithic to Omnivorous Dieting
This is a follow-up of a recent case study of the Paleolithic diet that investigates dietary changes, including energy intake, food sources, and macronutrient and micronutrient distribution, associated with a transition from a Paleolithic diet toward a more omnivorous pattern. We observed a more than 40% increase in carbohydrate intake and a 10% decrease in fat intake, including 20% less energy from saturated fat, less intake of nearly all micronutrients, and a substantially greater energy contribution from nonpaleo sources, including ultraprocessed foods. This analysis of 2 full years of nutrition data provides a unique d...

Sesame: Potential Health Benefits
Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is an annual plant whose seeds are purported to be one of the oldest oilseeds used by humans. Although originating in Africa and India, this plant currently is cultivated in diverse regions worldwide from semiarid tropics to temperate areas. This edible seed oil has many routine and diverse uses in food preparation and cooking, and the dehulled seed is included in the preparation of numerous food products, condiments, and confectionaries, imparting a distinctive savory, nutty, roasted flavor. Sesame has a long history of use in traditional medicines for treatment of wounds, asthma, blurred visio...

From Darkness Into…Darkness: Further Health/Science Communication Challenges in the Wake of COVID
The last 2 years have wrought profound changes in the science communication landscape, especially as it concerns health and related issues. In 2 previous articles, the present authors have analyzed risk and crisis communication in the COVID-19 environment—what mistakes may have been made and how communicators can improve message dissemination in future crisis situations. However, the effects of the past 2 years on current science communication do not end there. The recent enhanced focus on social media's possible role in spreading not only misinformation or disinformation but also actual harmful assaultive messaging has ...

Barriers to Implementing Weight Management Recommendations
Dietitians are responsible for using evidence-based practice to mitigate the effects of obesity; however, it is unclear how dietitians use research to guide weight management interventions. The aim of this pilot study was to identify the barriers of research utilization and implementation of evidence-based practice in adult weight management. A survey was disseminated to dietitians working at least part-time with people with obesity. Dietitians seem to value research and evidence-based practice; however, implementation may be an issue. The pilot study found that workplace setting may provide a barrier to research utilizati...

Physical Inactivity and Chronic Disease
The objective of this review is to update the state of the art regarding the influence of physical activity on the development of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and the physiological mechanisms that may be involved. At present, there is an urgent need to promote physical activity, as 28% of the world's population is physically inactive. Physical inactivity is responsible for 6% of the global disease burden from coronary heart disease, 7% of type 2 diabetes mellitus, 10% of breast cancers, and 10% of colon cancers. Physical inactivity is thought to promote oxidative stress, inflammation, and DNA damage and thus accelerated...

Mediterranean Diet and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease
The adherence to the Mediterranean diet involves a relatively large intake of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber, and potassium, and a low intake of saturated fat and sodium. It seems to be associated with decreased blood pressure, improved lipid profile, less inflammation, better endothelial function, and, therefore, a reduction in cardiovascular risk. To achieve these goals, the Mediterranean plan involves eating 3 servings of fish or shellfish a week, 2 servings of vegetables a day, 3 servings of fruit a day, and 90 g of nuts per week, and using olive oil as the main culinary fat. In ad...

Doris Howes Calloway: Improving Food Composition Tables
Food composition tables (FCTs) provide the levels of nutrients and other components in foods. Researchers, dietitians, educators, the food industry, and consumers use these tables to convert food intakes into nutrient intakes to evaluate foods, meals, and diets or to plan feeding programs. Doris Howes Calloway, along with her graduate students, made many contributions to the development of accurate FCTs, including one of the first tables to have complete values for every food: the UC Berkeley Mini-List, which was later extended into tables for use in the classroom and by the public, and a table that could be used globally....

Obesity Paradox: Does It Lengthen Survival in Iranian COVID Patients?
A prominent issue for patients with SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) is obesity. Some reports claim that obese patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome have better outcomes. This inverse relationship has been termed the obesity paradox and is not yet understood in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU). The aim of this study was to investigate the obesity paradox in patients with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU. In this retrospective observational study, 5230 patients with COVID-19, admitted to the ICU between June 1, 2020, and Janua...
