Improvement in Lung Clearance Index and Chest CT Scores with Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor Treatment in People with Cystic Fibrosis Aged 12 Years and Older - The RECOVER Study
CONCLUSIONS: ETI is associated with substantial improvements in LCI2.5, spirometry and PRAGMA-CF CT scores in people with CF aged 12 years and older. ETI led to improved nutrition and quality of life. People in the F508del/F508del group have significantly lower sweat chloride on ETI treatment compared to the F508del/MF group. Clinical trial registration available at www.CLINICALTRIALS: gov, ID: NCT04602468.PMID:37703083 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202308-1317OC

Availability of calorie information on online menus from chain restaurants in the USA: current prevalence and legal landscape
CONCLUSIONS: As consumers increasingly rely on TPP for restaurant ordering, menus on these platforms should include calories in order to promote transparency and nutrition.PMID:37700624 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023001799

Contribution of school meals to the recommended nutrient and energy intake of children enrolled in the National Homegrown School Feeding Program in Zaria, Nigeria
CONCLUSION: The meals served through the NHSFP contributed at least 33% of the RNI for energy, protein, iron, calcium, sodium, vitamin A, and zinc. However, they could not meet the 33% of the RNI for carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Increasing the portion sizes and the diversity of the meals can address the suboptimal contribution of the meals to the RNI for carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C.PMID:37704525 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2023.07.004

Association between Expanded Disability Status Scale score and dietary antioxidant capacity in patients with multiple sclerosis
Braz J Med Biol Res. 2023 Sep 8;56:e12776. doi: 10.1590/1414-431X2023e12776. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTMultiple sclerosis (MS), a neuroinflammation that results in neurodegeneration, is the most prevalent central nervous system inflammatory disease in young people. A diet rich in antioxidants is known to decrease the production/activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines and have a positive impact on the prognosis of MS. The purpose of this study was to assess if dietary antioxidant capacity is related to Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores in patients with MS. Patients with MS (n=220; 137 women and 83 men) were asked...

The prevalence and multilevel analysis of minimum dietary diversity intake and its determinants among 6-23  months old infants in The Gambia: further analysis of the Gambian demographic and health survey data
CONCLUSION: The World Health Organization dietary evaluation tool suggests that the MDD value be extremely low, even though it might be slightly higher than the numbers for some nations. The country may need to take drastic measures to tackle child malnutrition.PMID:37705103 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-023-00442-x

Bone marrow immune cells respond to fluctuating nutritional stress to constrain weight regain
Cell Metab. 2023 Sep 7:S1550-4131(23)00304-2. doi: 10.1016/j.cmet.2023.08.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWeight regain after weight loss is a major challenge in the treatment of obesity. Immune cells adapt to fluctuating nutritional stress, but their roles in regulating weight regain remain unclear. Here, we identify a stem cell-like CD7+ monocyte subpopulation accumulating in the bone marrow (BM) of mice and humans that experienced dieting-induced weight loss. Adoptive transfer of CD7+ monocytes suppresses weight regain, whereas inducible depletion of CD7+ monocytes accelerates it. These cells, accumulating metabolic ...

The association of the serum levels of aldehydes with diabetes-related eye diseases: a cross-sectional population-based study
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29750-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetes could impact many ocular tissues. However, the association of the serum aldehydes with diabetes-related eye diseases (DED) remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to examine the above relationship from the general US population of 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The multivariable logistic regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to analyze the effect of serum aldehydes on the risk of DED. Pearson's correlation analysis, the restricted cubic spline (RCS) mode...

Possible beneficial interactions of ciliated protozoans with coral health and resilience
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2023 Sep 13:e0121723. doi: 10.1128/aem.01217-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicrobial interactions contribute significantly to coral health in the marine environment. Most beneficial associations have been described with their bacterial communities, but knowledge of beneficial associations between protozoan ciliates and corals is still lacking. Ciliates are important bacterial predators and provide nutrition to higher trophic-level organisms. The mucus secreted by corals and the microenvironment of the coral surface layer attract ciliates based on their food preferences. The mixotrophic and heter...

A fluorescence biosensor for tyrosinase activity analysis based on silicon-doped carbon quantum dots
Chem Pharm Bull (Tokyo). 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1248/cpb.c23-00410. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTyrosinase (TYR) plays a pivotal role in the biosynthesis of melanin, and its activity level holds critical implications for vitiligo, melanoma cancer, and food nutritional value. The sensitive determination of TYR activity is of great significance for both fundamental research and clinical investigations. In this work, we successfully synthesized silicon-doped carbon quantum dots (Si-CQDs) through a one-pot hydrothermal method with trans-aconitic acid as carbon source and N-[3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine as the dopa...

Longitudinal Growth and Undernutrition Burden Among Term Low Birth Weight Newborns Reared in Adverse Socioeconomic Conditions in Delhi
CONCLUSION: With appropriate counselling of parents, term low birth weight infants reared under adverse socioeconomic conditions show substantial catch-up growth in BMIZ and WAZ but not in HAZ. The long-term consequences of this excess weight over length gain need focused evaluation.PMID:37700585

Quality analysis of the clinical laboratory literature and its effectiveness on clinical quality improvement: a systematic review
J Clin Biochem Nutr. 2023 Sep;73(2):108-115. doi: 10.3164/jcbn.23-22. Epub 2023 Jul 7.ABSTRACTQuality improvement in clinical laboratories is crucial to ensure accurate and reliable test results. With increasing awareness of the potential adverse effects of errors in laboratory practice on patient outcomes, the need for continual improvement of laboratory services cannot be overemphasized. A literature search was conducted on PubMed and a web of science core collection between October and February 2021 to evaluate the scientific literature quality of clinical laboratory quality improvement; only peer-reviewed articles writ...

Postoperative Growth and Brain Injury Outcomes in Spontaneous Intestinal Perforation vs Surgical Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Preterm Infants
CONCLUSION: In our cohort, preterm infants with SIP and sNEC did not show significant differences in postoperative morbidity and brain MRI abnormalities at term equivalent age. sNEC had lower discharge weight z scores. Larger prospective studies are needed for confirmation of these findings.PMID:37700582
