Stem cell-based therapy for COVID-19
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Sep 7;124(Pt A):110890. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110890. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that COVID-19 is no longer a public health emergency of international concern(PHEIC), the risk of reinfection and new emerging variants still makes it crucial to study and work towards the prevention of COVID-19. Stem cell and stem cell-like derivatives have shown some promising results in clinical trials and preclinical studies as an alternative treatment option for the pulmonary illnesses caused by the COVID-19 and can be used as a potential vaccine. In...

Association of Guillain-Barr é syndrome following COVID-19 vaccination
Conclusion: This review highlights the diverse and clinically relevant associations between COVID-19 vaccination and GBS. The findings underscore the importance of conducting further studies to explore the causative links in this correlation and gain a better understanding of the relationship.PMID:37681361 | DOI:10.1177/03946320231199349

Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Effect of Cannabidiol Against Enveloped and Nonenveloped Viruses
Conclusions: It was demonstrated that CBD inhibits structurally dissimilar viruses, suggesting that this phytochemical has broad-spectrum antiviral effect, representing a valuable alternative in emergency situations during viral outbreaks, like the one caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in 2020.PMID:37682578 | DOI:10.1089/can.2023.0103

Progress Toward Measles Elimination - African Region, 2017-2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2023 Sep 8;72(36):985-991. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7236a3.ABSTRACTWorldwide, measles remains a major cause of disease and death; the highest incidence is in the World Health Organization African Region (AFR). In 2011, the 46 AFR member states established a goal of regional measles elimination by 2020; this report describes progress during 2017-2021. Regional coverage with a first dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) decreased from 70% in 2017 to 68% in 2021, and the number of countries with ≥95% coverage decreased from six (13%) to two (4%). The number of countries providing a second MCV dose ...

Management of coronavirus disease 2019 vaccine-induced cutaneous complications: A comprehensive literature review
J Family Community Med. 2023 Jul-Sep;30(3):161-170. doi: 10.4103/jfcm.jfcm_3_23. Epub 2023 Jul 24.ABSTRACTDespite the numerous reports of cutaneous manifestations associated with vaccines for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the relationship between COVID-19 vaccines and cutaneous side effects remains unevaluated. In this review, we examine these manifestations and their management. Reported dermatoses included injection-site reaction (early and delayed), type I allergic reaction, morbilliform eruption, pityriasis rosea, Sweet syndrome, lichen planus, psoriasis, herpes zoster reactivation, erythema multiforme, Stevens-...

Determinants of post discharge mortality among hospitalized COVID-19 patients: Nested matched case-control analyses from the National Clinical Registry for COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: : Prior vaccination protects against post discharge mortality till one year in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. PCC may have long term deleterious effects, including mortality, for which further research is warranted.PMID:37675689 | DOI:10.4103/ijmr.ijmr_973_23

Getting Jab or Regular Test: Observations from an Impulsive Epidemic COVID-19 Model
This study proposes a population-based model that can accommodate different personal decision choices, such as getting vaccinated or undergoing regular tests, as well as vaccine efficacies and uncertainties in epidemic transmission. The model, formulated as impulsive differential equations, uses time instants to represent the reporting date for the test result of an unvaccinated individual. By employing well-accepted indices to measure transmission risk, including the basic reproduction number, the peak time, the final size, and the number of severe infections, the study shows that an optimal testing frequency is highly se...

Stimuli-Responsive Hydrogel Microcapsules Harnessing the COVID-19 Immune Response for Cancer Therapeutics
We present the development of stimuli-responsive microcapsules, loaded with a viral immunogenetic agent, harnessing the immune response against the Coronavirus Disease 2019, COVID-19, to selectively attack liver cancer cells (hepatoma) or recognize breast cancer or hepatoma, by expression of green fluorescence protein, GFP. The pH-responsive microcapsules, modified with DNA-tetrahedra nanostructures, increased hepatoma permeation by 50%. Incorporation of a GFP-encoding lentivirus vector inside the tumor-targeting pH-stimulated miRNA-triggered and Alpha-fetoprotein-dictated microcapsules enables the demonstration of neoplas...

COVID-19: An Overview of SARS-CoV-2 Variants-The Current Vaccines and Drug Development
Biomed Res Int. 2023 Aug 29;2023:1879554. doi: 10.1155/2023/1879554. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe world is presently in crisis facing an outbreak of a health-threatening microorganism known as COVID-19, responsible for causing uncommon viral pneumonia in humans. The virus was first reported in Wuhan, China, in early December 2019, and it quickly became a global concern due to the pandemic. Challenges in this regard have been compounded by the emergence of several variants such as B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P1, and B.1.617, which show an increase in transmission power and resistance to therapies and vaccines. Ongoing researches are ...
