Naphthoquinone derivatives targeting melanoma
Curr Top Med Chem. 2023 Sep 1. doi: 10.2174/1568026623666230901124059. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCancer is responsible for high mortality rates worldwide, representing a serious health problem. In this sense, melanoma corresponds to the most aggressive type of skin cancer, being the cause of the highest death rates. Therapeutic strategies for the treatment of melanoma remain limited, with problems associated with toxicity, serious side effects, and mechanisms of resistance. The potential of natural products for the prevention and treatment of melanoma has been reported in different studies. Among these compounds, napht...

Does genetic risk modify the effect of skin screening on melanoma detection rates?
CONCLUSIONS: Genetic risk predicts subsequent melanoma incidence, and is weakly associated with screening behaviour, but does not explain the higher rate of melanoma detection between screened and unscreened people.PMID:37681503 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljad333

Can active sun exposure decrease the risk of giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica in women?
CONCLUSION: Active sun exposure did not affect the risk of developing GCA or PMR in women in a cohort with restricted latitudinal variability.PMID:37675201 | PMC:PMC10477307 | DOI:10.1093/rap/rkad071

The level of macrophage migration inhibitory factor is negatively correlated with the efficacy of PD-1 blockade immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy as a neoadjuvant therapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
CONCLUSION: Baseline MIF levels were negatively correlated with neoadjuvant therapy efficacy. Thus, MIF may serve as a predictive biomarker for this therapy. The accuracy of the prediction could be improved if the serum concentration of MIF is measured again after the patient received several weeks of treatment.PMID:37678132 | DOI:10.1016/j.tranon.2023.101775

Characteristics and risk factors for advanced lung cancer with pulmonary embolism: A cross-sectional, case-control study
CONCLUSION: Our study provides valuable insights into the epidemiology and prognosis of PE in lung cancer patients and suggests that a poor ECOG PS, which has not been previously reported, is an independent risk factor for PE.PMID:37675831 | DOI:10.1111/crj.13692

ELF4 contributes to esophageal squamous cell carcinoma growth and metastasis by augmenting cancer stemness via FUT9
Acta Biochim Biophys Sin (Shanghai). 2023 Sep 7. doi: 10.3724/abbs.2023225. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEsophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) commonly has aggressive properties and a poor prognosis. Investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying the progression of ESCC is crucial for developing effective therapeutic strategies. Here, by performing transcriptome sequencing in ESCC and adjacent normal tissues, we find that E74-like transcription factor 4 (ELF4) is the main upregulated transcription factor in ESCC. The results of the immunohistochemistry show that ELF4 is overexpressed in ESCC tissues and is signific...

Crosstalk between PD-L1 and Jak2-Stat3/ MAPK-AP1 signaling promotes oral cancer progression, invasion and therapy resistance
CONCLUSIONS: PD-L1 was regulated mainly by the Jak2-Stat3/ MAPK-AP1 pathway, and besides the routine immunological functions, it supports OSCC survival, invasion, and therapy resistance. PD-L1 can be used as an indicator of severity and can be targeted along with Jak2-Stat3/ MAPK-AP1 for a better outcome OSCC.PMID:37678027 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110894

Mutational signatures and their association with survival and gene expression in urological carcinomas
Neoplasia. 2023 Sep 5;44:100933. doi: 10.1016/j.neo.2023.100933. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDifferent sources of mutagenesis cause consistently identifiable patterns of mutations and mutational signatures that mirror the various carcinogenetic processes. We used publicly available data from the Cancer Genome Atlas to evaluate the associations between the activity of the mutational signatures and various survival endpoints in six types of urological cancers after adjusting for established prognostic factors. The predictive power of the signatures was evaluated with dynamic area under curve models. In addition, links betw...
