Fecal microbiota transplantation: current challenges and future landscapes
Clin Microbiol Rev. 2024 May 8:e0006022. doi: 10.1128/cmr.00060-22. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSUMMARYGiven the importance of gut microbial homeostasis in maintaining health, there has been considerable interest in developing innovative therapeutic strategies for restoring gut microbiota. One such approach, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), is the main "whole gut microbiome replacement" strategy and has been integrated into clinical practice guidelines for treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). Furthermore, the potential application of FMT in other indications such as inflammatory bowel dise...

Association of severity of menstrual dysfunction with cardiometabolic risk markers among women with polycystic ovary syndrome
ConclusionsPCOS women with amenorrhea show a higher prevalence of insulin resistance, prediabetes, and dyslipidemia compared with those with oligomenorrhea or eumenorrhea. The severity of menstrual dysfunction could be used as a readily obtainable marker for the identification of PCOS women at greatest risk of cardiometabolic diseases. miR-449a disturbs atherosclerotic plaque stability in streptozotocin and high-fat diet-induced diabetic mice by targeting CEACAM1
Emerging evidence indicates carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) is involved in the development of atherosclerosis (AS). However, the roles and functions of CEACAM1 in AS remain ... (Source: Diabetology and Metabolic Syndrome)

The effect of PAP on UACR and metabolic indexes in patients with MS and OSAHS
ConclusionsPAP treatment can reduce UACR in patients with MS and OSAHS, and has the effect of improving metabolic disorders. The decrease of UACR in patients may be related to the decrease of visceral fat and the improvement of insulin resistance. (Source: Sleep and Breathing)

Deep learning imaging phenotype can classify metabolic syndrome and is predictive of cardiometabolic disorders
Cardiometabolic disorders pose significant health risks globally. Metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of potentially reversible metabolic abnormalities, is a known risk factor for these disorders. E... (Source: Journal of Translational Medicine)

A proposed simplified definition of metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents: a global perspective
BMC Med. 2024 May 7;22(1):190. doi: 10.1186/s12916-024-03406-y.ABSTRACTMetabolic syndrome (MetS) is becoming prevalent in the pediatric population. The existing pediatric MetS definitions (e.g., the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) definition and the modified National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) definition) involve complex cut-offs, precluding fast risk assessment in clinical practice. We proposed a simplified definition for assessing MetS risk in youths aged 6-17 years, and compared its performance with two existing widely used pediatric definitions (the IDF definition, and the NCEP definition) in 10 pediat...
