Modeling Streptococcus pyogenes Pharyngeal Colonization in the Mouse
In conclusion, the mouse pharyngeal colonization model is an affordable and accessible experimental system that allows a broader group of research groups to test the importance of their findings in an in vivo model. There is a great deal of overlap between the bacterial and immune factors found to be important in human and murine pharyngeal colonization. Although MHC-II humanized mice could prove useful in answering certain questions, the use of inbred mouse lines appears to be sufficient for evaluation of most questions, both related to bacterial factors and the host immune response. However, when promising treatments or ...

Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines for preventing acute otitis media in children.
CONCLUSIONS: Administration of the licenced CRM197-PCV7 and PHiD-CV10 during early infancy is associated with large relative risk reductions in pneumococcal AOM. However, the effects of these vaccines on all-cause AOM is far more uncertain. We found no evidence of a beneficial effect on all-cause AOM of administering PCVs in high-risk infants, after early infancy (i.e. in children one year and above), and in older children with a history of respiratory illness. Compared to control vaccines, PCVs were associated with an increase in mild local reactions (redness, swelling), fever, and pain and/or tenderness. We found no evid...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, June 3rd 2019
In conclusion, there is solid evidence that obesity deregulates cellular mechanisms related to nutrient sensing. Altered Intercellular Communication It is accepted that aging impacts the organism at the cellular level, but also decreases the capacity of cells of an organism to interact. During aging, there is a decreased communication at the neuronal, neuroendocrine, and endocrine levels. Two of the most compelling examples of impaired communication are inflammaging and immunosenescence. The inflammaging phenotype results in elevated cytokines. These cytokines can accelerate and propagate the aging process. T...

Immunizations During Pregnancy: How, When and Why
Publication date: Available online 14 June 2019Source: European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive BiologyAuthor(s): Alexandros Psarris, Michael Sindos, Georgios Daskalakis, Maria Eleni Chondrogianni, Stefani Panayiotou, Panagiotis Antsaklis, Dimitrios LoutradisAbstractMaternal immunization during pregnancy provide protection for the mother and the fetus against certain pathogens. Immunizations during pregnancy are divided to routine immunizations recommended for all pregnant women, immunizations for certain medical indications and vaccines that are potentially harmful during pregnancy and should be avoide...

Interventions to Increase the Rate of Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccination in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Scoping Review.
Conclusions: Further, adequately powered, high quality studies are needed. It is crucial for individual institutions to monitor their own vaccination rates to determine if there is scope for performance improvement. PMID: 31208087 [PubMed - in process]

Summary of the NACI Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Statement for 2019-2020.
Conclusion: NACI continues to recommend that an age-appropriate influenza vaccine should be offered annually to anyone six months of age and older who does not have contraindications to the vaccine, with focus on the groups for whom influenza vaccination is particularly recommended. This includes people at high risk of influenza-related complications or hospitalization, people capable of transmitting influenza to those at high risk, people who provide essential community services and people in direct contact with poultry infected with avian influenza during culling operations. Acceptance and uptake of influenza vaccines in Asia: A systematic review.
Abstract In Asia, the public health burden of influenza is significant despite the existence of efficacious influenza vaccines. Annual seasonal influenza vaccination can reduce the incidence of influenza significantly, yet influenza vaccination coverage remains low in this part of the world. As a densely populated region with varying climatic zones and a larger proportion of developing countries compared to the West, Asia is at increased risk of influenza. To provide a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the Asian region, the key objective of this systematic review is to examine the determinants of vac...

Japanese anti- versus pro-influenza vaccination websites: a text-mining analysis
SummaryAnti-vaccination sentiment exists worldwide and Japan is no exception. Health professionals publish pro-influenza vaccination messages online to encourage proactive seeking of influenza vaccination. However, influenza vaccine coverage among the Japanese population is less than optimal. The contents of pro- and anti-influenza vaccination websites may contribute to readers ’ acceptance of one or the other position. We aimed to use a text-mining method to examine frequently appearing content on websites for and against influenza vaccination. We conducted online searches in January 2017 using two major Japanese search...

Italian recommendations for influenza and pneumococcal vaccination in adult patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
CONCLUSIONS: Influenza and pneumococcus vaccinations are effective and safe in patients with ARDs. More efforts should be made to translate the accumulated evidence into practice. PMID: 31498077 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

IJERPH, Vol. 16, Pages 3981: To Be or Not to Be Vaccinated? The Ethical Aspects of Influenza Vaccination among Healthcare Workers
ert Influenza is a highly contagious airborne disease with a significant morbidity and mortality burden. Seasonal influenza (SI) vaccination has been recommended for healthcare workers (HCWs) for many years. Despite many efforts to encourage HCWs to be immunized against influenza, vaccination uptake remains suboptimal. Sometimes there is a significant sign of improvement, only if numerous measures are taken. Is ‘the evidence’ and ‘rationale’ sufficient enough to support mandatory influenza vaccination policies? Most voluntary policies to increase vaccination rates...

Increasing Influenza Vaccination Rates in People With Chronic Illness.
CONCLUSION: A variety of approaches can be effective. Focusing training sessions for medical practice teams on certain diseases may be of greater benefit than vacci- nation-centered training sessions. Reminder systems for doctors should be more reliably implemented. Simple strategies are perhaps the most suitable ones in the heterogeneous population of chronically ill persons. The limitations of this system- atic review include the heterogeneity of the studies that we examined and the small number of studies in each category. PMID: 31617479 [PubMed - in process]
