Low Consultation Rate of General Population with Atrial Fibrillation.
In conclusion, about one-third of the patients with AF did not regularly see a doctor in a medical institution and most of them had a CHADS2 score of more than one point in a Japanese rural area. Educating the public about the risks of AF is required. PMID: 31735770 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

An unusual cause of stroke and sudden death: Intracavitary left ventricular echinococcosis
A 68-year old man with a history of hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease and an obliterating lower limbs arteritis, presented for a stroke. Electrocardiogram did not show atrial fibrillation nor ischemic electrocardiographic signs. White blood cell count (10800/m3) was high but eosinophil count (234/mm3) was normal. Atherosclerosis origin of the stroke was suspected.

Association between atrial septal aneurysm and arrhythmias.
Conclusions. Certain types of arrhythmias such as APC, VPC, SVT and paroxysmal AF have been shown to be independently associated with the presence of ASA. PMID: 31544553 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of trans-myocardial repolarisation parameters with size of the diffusion limitation area in acute ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: When we compared the patients with ischaemic stroke who had no known cardiac disease to those in the control group we found an increase in transmyocardial repolarisation parameters. As diffusion limitation areas grew larger, QT, QTc, P, and Tp-e dispersions increased. Physicians should be aware of dysrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in acute stroke and should observe these patients, especially those with larger stroke lesions. Electrocardiogram Changes as an Independent Predictive Factor of Mortality in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke; a Cohort Study.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study, it seems that along with age and history of cardiac diseases, ECG changes can be considered as an independent predictive factor of mortality in patients with ischemic stroke. PMID: 31432037 [PubMed]

Percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale under transthoracic echocardiography guidance-midterm results.
Conclusions: In this single center study of mostly lean patients, percutaneous closure of PFO under TTE guidance as the only imaging tool appeared effective at midterm follow-up, while avoiding radiation exposure, endotracheal intubation and contrast agent use. PMID: 31372266 [PubMed]

Detection of Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter by Pacemaker Device Interrogation After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR): Implications for Management.
CONCLUSION: Subclinical NOAF is common after TAVR, usually occurs months after hospital discharge, and is associated with lack of anticoagulation therapy and increased risk of stroke. Prolonged surveillance of subclinical NOAF may be warranted after TAVR. PMID: 31257211 [PubMed - in process]

Salutary Effects of the PULVAD, a Novel Implantable Counterpulsation Assist Device, on Cardiac Mechanoenergetics
In conclusion, the PULVAD unloads the failing LV, optimizes LV mechanoenergetics, and augments coronary blood flow. These salutary effects of short-term PULVAD support provide the foundation for long-term testing.

Design and rationale of a pragmatic trial integrating routine screening for atrial fibrillation at primary care visits: The VITAL-AF trial
Publication date: Available online 22 June 2019Source: American Heart JournalAuthor(s): Jeffrey M. Ashburner, Steven J. Atlas, David D. McManus, Yuchiao Chang, Ana T. Trisini Lipsanopoulos, Leila H. Borowsky, Wyliena Guan, Wei He, Patrick T. Ellinor, Daniel E. Singer, Steven A. LubitzAbstractGiven the preventable morbidity and mortality associated with atrial fibrillation (AF), increased awareness of undiagnosed AF, and advances in mobile ECG technology, there is a critical need to assess the effectiveness of using such technology to routinely screen for AF in clinical practice. VITAL-AF is a pragmatic trial that will test...

Correlation Between Intracranial Arterial Calcification and Imaging of Cerebral Small Vessel Disease
Conclusion: Intracranial artery calcification is common in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease and the intracranial carotid artery is most frequently affected. Intracranial arterial calcifications might be associated with imaging markers of SVD and are highly correlated with WMHs, lacunes, and CMBs. Quantification of calcification on CT provides additional information on the pathophysiology of SVD. Intracranial arterial calcification could act as a potential marker of SVD. Introduction Atherosclerosis is a systemic vascular process that is considered a major cause of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular di...

Propensity Score-Matched Analysis of Lesion Patterns in Stroke Patients With Patent Foramen Ovale and Patients With Spontaneous Intracranial Artery Dissection
Conclusion: The present study suggests that lesion patterns observed from DWI of patients with PFO and SIAD might provide clues to the etiology of infarcts. Single lesions (cortical or subcortical) might be a typical feature of PFO associated strokes, while multiple lesions in one vascular territory might be a specific feature of SIAD associated strokes. Introduction Both patent foramen ovale (PFO) and spontaneous intracranial artery dissection (SIAD) are important stroke risk factors, especially in young and middle-aged adults (1–3). About 25% of patients with ischemic stroke are cryptogenic (4), and PFO is ...

Combination of Dexmedetomidine and Ketamine for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Sedation
Conclusions: The efficacy of DEX–KET sedation was comparable to that of midazolam for MRI examination. DEX–KET was related to shorter scan time and lower occurrence of complications compared to midazolam. Introduction Neurocritically ill patients often require brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in addition to conventional neurological evaluations. Brain MRI can reveal structural lesions with a high sensitivity due to its excellent spatial resolution and enhanced soft tissue contrast (1–3). To acquire MRI images, patients' cooperation is imperative. However, keeping patients with ...

Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Is Associated With Circadian and Other Variability in Embolus Detection
Conclusions: Embolism associated with asymptomatic carotid stenosis shows circadian variation with highest rates 4–6 h before midday. This corresponds with peak circadian incidence of stroke and other vascular complications. These and ASED Study results show that monitoring frequency, duration, and time of day are important in ES detection. Introduction Transcranial Doppler (TCD) detected microembolism in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) may help stratify the risk of stroke and other arterial disease complications in persons with advanced (≥60%) asymptomatic carotid stenosis. If so, this t...

P wave dispersion and silent atrial fibrillation in cryptogenic stroke: the pathogenic role of inflammation.
CONCLUSIONS: In cryptogenic stroke, high PWD is partly due to systemic inflammation that increases AF risk possibly via atrial electric remodeling. These findings could also suggest inflammation as a possible therapeutic target in order to prevent atrial electrical alterations and finally AF occurrence in CS. YiQiFuMai Powder Injection Attenuates Coronary Artery Ligation-Induced Heart Failure Through Improving Mitochondrial Function via Regulating ROS Generation and CaMKII Signaling Pathways
This study was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, National Institutes of Health.” The protocol was approved by the “China Pharmaceutical University.” Surgical Preparation The mice were anesthetized with chloral hydrate (4% chloral hydrate, ip). The HF model was induced by CAL as previously reported (Gao et al., 2010). Successful ligation of the coronary artery was confirmed by the occurrence of ST-segment elevation in electrocardiogram. Sham operated mice were performed the same process except left CAL. After ligation, the h...
