Optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction of fatty acids from royal jelly and its effect on the structural and antioxidant property
In this study, a novel ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method was established to extract fatty acids from RJ and their structural and antioxidant property were further evaluated. The optimum extraction conditions were as follows: liquid-to-solid ratio of 10:1, ultrasonic power of 450 W and ultrasonic duration of 20 min, resulting in a better extraction yield of 16.48 % and 10-hydroxy-2(E)-decenoic acid (10-HDA) content of 4.12 %. Furthermore, compared with the solvent extraction method, the antioxidant activity of extract by ultrasound was enhanced significantly by at least 448 %. GC-MS showed that ultrasound didn't c...

Identification of effective anti-HCV and anti-HIV royal jelly constituents and their acute toxicity evaluation in Albino rats
Food Chem Toxicol. 2023 Nov 8:114170. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2023.114170. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFew studies on royal jelly's (RJ) antiviral activities and toxicity have been conducted. Here, we investigated the antioxidant properties of RJ that was fractionated into soluble fraction (SF), non-soluble fraction (NSF), water-soluble protein fraction (crude protein fraction, CPF), PF30, PF40, PF50, and PF60. The PFs were identified by SDS-PAGE, and phenolic constituents of SF were detected by HPLC. The qualitative anti-HCV, immunomodulatory, and predicted impact of the studied fractions on ERK2/MAPK14 (activated by HCV) we...

Effects of royal jelly on the antisenescence, mitochondrial viability and osteogenic differentiation capacity of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells
AbstractMesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells that have the ability to self-renew and regulate paracrine signalling and immune system processes. MSCs have extensive clinical applications in regeneration, functional reconstruction and cellular therapies. However, studies are needed to discover ways to improve the properties of MSCs, such as differentiation, and prevent senescence in culture, which are both very important for cell therapies. Royal jelly (RJ) is a nutritional substance produced by worker bees that contains a substantial amounts of proteins that are beneficial for cell growth and proliferation. R...

Fabrication of green composite hand knitted silk mesh reinforced with silk hydrogel
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Oct 6:127284. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127284. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSoft tissue defects like hernia and post-surgical fistula formation can be resolved with modern biomaterials in the form of meshes without post-operative complications. In the present study hand knitted silk meshes were surface coated with regenerated silk fibroin hydrogel and pure natural extracts. Two phytochemicals (Licorice extract (LE) and Bearberry extract (BE)) and the two honeybee products (royal jelly (RJ) and honey (HE)) were incorporated separately to induce antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound heali...

A new approach for the treatment of bleomycin-induced rat pulmonary injury by combined protein fraction of major royal jelly protein 2 and its isoform X1
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 22;167:115578. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115578. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNowadays, royal jelly (RJ) has gained great interest as a functional food due to its valuable pharmacological effects. We investigated the therapeutic potency of combined protein fraction (PF50) of major RJ protein 2 and its isoform X1 on bleomycin (Bleo)-induced pulmonary injury in rats. Our study examined the impact of PF50 on pulmonary oxidative and inflammatory stress as well as smooth muscle alpha-actin (α-SMA). In addition, the predicted impacts of this PF on the activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)- 8...

Mandibular glands secrete 24-methylenecholesterol into honey bee (Apis mellifera) food jelly
Insect Biochem Mol Biol. 2023 Sep 14:104011. doi: 10.1016/j.ibmb.2023.104011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHoney bee (Apis mellifera) workers feed their larvae with food jelly that is secreted by specialized glands in their heads - the hypopharyngeal and the mandibular glands. Food jelly contains all the nutrients the larvae need to develop into adult honey bees, including essential dietary sterols. The main sterol in food jelly, 24-methylenecholesterol (24 MC), is pollen-derived and delivered in food jelly to the larvae in a complex with two proteins, major royal jelly protein 1 (MRJP1) and apisim. Whereas the proteins a...
