Fair wages for outpatient secretary- California
I am in the process of hiring a secretary (as 1099) to my psych office. The secretary will work remotely most of the days ( she will be in the office once a week). The work involves in answering calls, scheduling appointments and processing claims (calling insurance for claims denied and so on). My EMR is luminello, so I submit the claims myself (but sometimes we spend time calling insurance for several issues). I check the average wages for "hospital secretary" and it shows as... OHSU psychiatry residency strength
Hello SDN, I've searched basically every thread on here about OHSU psych and there's been no really substantial information about this program on SDN since the mid to late 2010's. It astounds me how little there is about the psych programs in general (even on the ERAS megathreads). I would appreciate any and all advice about this program. From what I've garnered the program has a strong community focus and has recently undergone resident driven changes to the curriculum to allow more child... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is this unethical behavior?
Have a patient who has a history of AUD. Has had relative sobriety over the last 4-5 months, only a handful of heavy drinking days. Says they went to detox (obviously not medically indicated) earlier this month following two days of moderate drinking. They frequently goes to detox for "fluids and a taper" when they are pushed to do so by family despite no medical indication. I also suspect there is an element of dependency which is met by the detox environment. At this most recent detox... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Patients with multiple controlled substances.
I'm seeing this constantly now, patients on 2-3 controlled substances at once by the same prescriber. e.g. Xanax 2 mg TID, Adderall 20 mg BID, Suboxone 8-2 mg BID I've been tempted to just tell patients I will only prescribe only 1 controlled substance at once. How do you handle transfers or new patients with these regimens? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

MS3 need advice choosing: IM vs. psych
Hi, I'm applying for residency this year and struggling to choose a specialty - psych vs. IM. If I do IM, I'll likely pursue endocrinology since I enjoy working in clinic and don't love procedures. Here are what I see as the pros/cons - I appreciate any input! Psych pros: -ability to run my own practice/work outside of a hospital setting -I'm really interested in psychotherapy, and I enjoyed reading my psychiatry textbook -I hate working nights, and psych offers opportunity for a regular... Medical-Legal Risks to Patients of Psychiatric Clinical Documentation
Thinking about technology and information risks got me thinking about a recent journeyman shrink realization I got schooled on and wanted to ask my elders here how they avoid inadvertent documentation traps that early stage psychiatrist like me may unknowingly set for patients. 2 early stage private psychiatry ethical issues I walked into with my documentation: I documented suicidality and substance abuse thoroughly in a person who made a complete recovery from both of those, but whose... DMU COM vs Rowan-SOM vs NSU KPCOM
Hey y’all. Super grateful to hold acceptances to these 3 schools. If anyone could help me decide or list their pros and cons for these schools I would really appreciate it. For reference I am interested in Psychiatry, IM, EM, and Pediatrics. In terms of location I would like to practice in TX, FL, or NJ. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Bipolar I and med school
I was recently diagnosed with bipolar I disorder in June 2022. I was pre-med in undergrad (BA Biochemistry) and have a pre-med postbacc under my belt (MS in Biomedical Science). I am not the typical pre-med; non-traditional student 31 YO. I check ALL of the boxes except MCAT (two <50% attempts). Got the grades, research, volunteering, patient care experience, everything. Didn't do a typical postabacc either, it was at an academic med center/med school and we took the MS 1 curriculum for our... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
