Credit Card Payment For Private Practice - HIPAA Compliance Needed?
Dumb question sorry...do I need a credit card processor that's HIPAA compliant for private practice for "cash payment" customers? In previous threads I searched here I saw people talking about taking Venmo, which I'm pretty sure is not HIPAA compliant lol. Does something like Stripe/Square/Venmo work? I want to integrate payment within Google Forms (which is HIPAA compliant). Any guidance would be much appreciated. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How do I find a group practice to join?
Hello! I'm a PGY-4 resident at a program across the country from where I plan to move after graduation (NYC). I am leaning towards going into private practice, but I have no business experience and would prefer to be among colleagues as I'm just starting out.. problem is, I have no psychiatry connections in the area. I've looked on indeed.com, practicelink, etc but it seems like there really aren't any job listings in line with what I'm looking for. So... how exactly do I go about this? Is... Mt. Sinai Psychiatry is a joke
Now that I graduated from Mt. Sinai's residency program in psychiatry, I wish to share my thoughts (albeit anonymously): The program is a complete joke, largely due to the inadequate administration. Basically, the program director is this really old guy who used to run Columbia, before he was forced into retirement. For some reason, Mt. Sinai decided to pick him up despite his age. He's been at Mt. Sinai for the last 8 years, and while he is good at getting funding, the residency training... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Which antidepressant is the safest to give with Vyvanse?
Serotonin Syndrome: Both Vyvanse and sertraline can increase serotonin levels in the brain. When taken together, there may be an increased risk of developing a condition called serotonin syndrome, which is a potentially life-threatening condition that can cause symptoms like confusion, hallucination, seizure, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination... is child psychiatry worth it from a financial standpoint?
I have enjoyed my child psych rotations quite a bit. However, so much time is spent on a single case - is it worth it financially? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship
Hello I am interested in applying to a forensic psychiatry fellowship. I did not get much experience in my general residency and only had experience at the Juvenile Justice System for my CAP fellowship. During fellowship it was more clinical exposure than forensics per se. I always had an interest in psychiatry and the law, attended UC Davis: CAP and the Law series of case conferences (which were amazing) and it wasn't until the tail end of my CAP fellowship that I decided to apply for the... Suggestions for headache resources for non-neurologists
So as a psychiatrist I find the treatment of headache kind of fascinating. Based on the medications y'all use and how you use them it seems like bizarro world psychiatry in many respects. So many familiar names, but doing strange things. Also, migraines and chronic headaches of all sorts are super common among my patients, and, like sleep, doing something about someone's migraine is a way to get buy-in for people who otherwise don't necessarily agree that they should be seeing you when the... What goes wrong in a (psychologist's) family?
The Last Psychiatrist: What Goes Wrong In A Psychiatrist's Family? With the study on yelling that's active right now. I thought it might be fruitful to discuss this. From the Last Psychiatrist: So maybe I am generalizing a bit, but I'm trying to get at something that isn't easily explained by science: why do so many psychiatrist families go bad in the same way? In my experience (see, there's my disclaimer) psychiatrist-parents go wrong in a very specific way... Click to expand... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Weird case. Treatment Resistant Depression but after a snake bite
Got a patient that was already seen by a great clinician and she couldn't get this patient better. Was tried on all the conventional meds. A few SSRIs, SNRIs, Lamotrigine, Lithium, atypical antipsychotics (and yes the better ones for depression such as Aripiprazole, Cariprazine) , Bupropion, augmentation agents such as Buspirone, Auvelity, Esketamine, TMS (not ECT...yet). After several meetings she finally said something that hit me like a ton of bricks. She told me she never had mental... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Weird legal situation-wife wants financial records
I got a patient who I saw for a few years, his diagnosis and most of the medical stuff is not relevant. He would do better with treatment but stayed in the mild to moderate range. Getting to the point, the patient's wife several month's ago requested all of the patient's financial transactions with my office. So, the obvious out of the way, I told my assistant to tell her no. There's no HIPAA release. So okay fine. That settled the issue for several days. I later see the patient and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Sleep fellowship as psychiatrist?!
Hi all, unfortunately my faculty didn't help with majority of these questions so hoping the hive here can help with some viewpoints. 1. How hard is it for psychiatry residents to match sleep? I unfortunately don't have any sleep research and just have a rotation that I did and loved. 2. How difficult is the learning curve for a psych resident to learn about CPAP titrations and such? 3. What is the average sleep income looking like these days and hours worked. My attendings didn't feel... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

When do you panic and apply to additional residencies?
I am a 3rd year family medicine resident, looking to apply for a second (psychiatry) residency after completing FM. I am applying in this year's ERAS/Match cycle and have submitted to 50+ programs in the northeast. Haven't heard from any programs yet. At what point do I panic and pull the trigger and apply to more programs? --Sean (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is working for Kaiser Permanente a nightmare?
In short, should I give my name and CV to their specific recruiter(s)? I’d be interested if it could give me a situation where I work 3 days per week and make 240K in one of a few specific locations. I don’t know if that’s possible or not. Is it? If yes, does it require selling yr soul? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What psychiatric illness/disorder would you say has the worst overall prognosis/outcomes?
The research on this seems to show that it largely depends on the metric you use to measure outcomes (e.g., suicide rate, overall mortality, self-related QOL, functioning [and what domain of functioning], disability-adjusted life years [I have serious issues with that concept, but that's another topic], time without hospitalization, etc), so I'm curious, based on the overall gestalt of "outcomes" what disorder(s) would you consider to have the worst outcomes and why?
