Auvelity
has insurance coverage gotten better with this or does insurance coverage still restrict its use significantly? For the people using it, have you guys been using adjunct medicaitons with auvelity like SGAs, SSRIs or just using it as a primary therapy? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Influx of adult ADHD referrals in outpatient
Since starting my private practice a few months ago, it seems like over half of new patients are coming with complaints of ADHD symptoms. It's usually people who've never had a diagnosis of it and want treatment. Occasionally it's people on reasonable current regiments, but there have also been some heroic doses of adderall prescribed as well by previous psychiatrists/pcps. Have you all noticed an uptick in these referrals? This wasn't an issue for me in my residency or my previous ACT job... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Suggestions on referral sources for new private practice
I am curious what all of you have found to be successful for patient recruitment. I am paneled on several insurance companies but not the biggest in my state. What I have done thus far: -Zocdoc- complete trash for out of network referrals, perhaps 1/5 actually turned into a patient, I restricted it to only in network referrals. -psychology today- steady but slow, getting only 3-4 new patients a month -networking with local PCP- so far nothing, they have been very receptive, but I just... Psychiatry resident - ask me anything
Don't think this has been done for several years now, not sure, and there's been an uptick in medical student interest in the field. Anybody out there? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Carilion Clinic: Virginia Tech Psychiatry Residency Program
Hello all, I am an IMG with GC, and I am interested in ranking Carilion Clinic Virginia Tech Psychiatry Program. I live in Miami, FL. I have been to Roanoke/Blacksburg region as my fiance lives/ is from there. Very different from Miami, but not necessarily a bad different. Could any1 give their opinion/views on the Psychiatry Residency at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke VA? I don't see many experiences of this program on the forum. The PD is now a male, not female like a previous post from 2017... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Very small private practice vs locums to maintain clinical experience?
I’m >5 years out of psych residency and extremely burned out, made a job change last year in hopes of improvement though have ended up even more crispy. I’m planning to discuss going part time with my current supervisor but I anticipate the answer will be no so I am working on my contingency plan. I’d like to take a significant break before jumping back in, and want to maintain some clinical experience while I’m sorting things out. I think it’s feasible to start a private practice, with goal... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

States with the Most and Least Onerous Commitment Procedures
I'm curious about how challenging commitment procedures are in different states. I enjoy inpatient psychiatry, but have found that the commitment procedures in my current state of practice are so dreadful that they seriously detract from my ability to help patients. How are the proceedings in other states? I'm thinking about long-term areas in which to practice, as inpatient is my setting of choice, and I would like to know which states will allow me to help patients most effectively. Here's... Metabolic Psychiatry?
Unlurking for this one. There's a new theory of mental illness conceptualization and tx called metabolic psychiatry. The basic idea is that much of what we call mental illness can be conceptualized as a metabolic disorder of the brain. It's the bio part of a new biopsychosocial model (the psychosocial part is not ignored). Emerging evidence suggests that by addressing brain metabolism through lifestyle factors (principally but not exclusively through "ketogenic metabolic therapy," or... Belsomra
I do mostly inpatient consults but have a small subspecialialzed outpatient practice as part of my faculty position. Prescribed Belsomra (suvorexant) this week for the first time and discovered it's a controlled substance. Why?? Is there actually any abuse potential? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Chances of matching into top psychiatry programs?
Just wondering how I can solidify my application. I hope to return to Manhattan w/ my fiance and family. Currently in a mid-tier (top 50) school on the east coast. URM, demonstrated interest in psych from undergrad. Have an MPH with applied practice in neurodiversity and advocacy. Poster Presentations - 6 (one at a national conference as the presenting author) Research Projects - 5 Research Publication - 1 pending :\ Published in creative writing (I dunno if this counts lol) National... Thoughts on invol hosp for SI
Hey there guys. We were having this discussion on another thread, so I decided to create this one. What are your real thoughts about the subject? This is much more common in the US than in other countries, and I do believe it is mostly CYA than actual treatment. I have seen some very absurd cases of people being locked up due to "SI" when it was actually not. I actually think it's quite harmful to just throw people in a little jail for a few days when they say they have suicide... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Supervising NP- does it normally take this long?
I signed a contract last year with a company that is affiliated with one of the places that I work to supervise a nurse practicitoner. I knew they had not yet hired one and I would be involved in the hiring process. This was last July. I interviewed one candidate who made it to the “final interview”, but they never told me what happened with her and I guess it didn’t work out. I am now getting emails to interview 3 new candidates, one of which her bio says won’t be credentialed fully until... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thoughts on this VA heavy residency program?
I'm trying to figure out my rank list and, in particular, where to rank a program that is heavily VA-based About 75% of the total clinical training is at the VA hospital in a major, diverse metropolitan area. It is closely affiliated with another (quite prestigious, for what that's worth) psych program where a couple of months of inpatient training are done and with whom didactics are shared. In addition, it is a flexible 4th year with a ton of elective options, both public and private. The... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

College Psychiatry
What are some pluses and minuses of a gig being a psychiatrist for a college campus? Other than low pay likely. Minuses off the top of my head (and I have a bias against the outpatient world): 1. Likely a fair amount of reading up on adhd and psychostimulant seeking (this is actually in line with my exposure to this cohort w/in a more general adult population and outpatient settings). 2. Higher risk age group for suicide (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thoughts on this job?
I recently found a job that pays around ~$130 per ED tele consult, 1099, no overhead cost (malpractice and licensing are done by the company). Average consult per hour is about 1.5, and there are no shortages of consult per company representative (no consult=no money). The downside is that I need to do minimum of 1 year. Any thoughts?
