Potential liability of a clinic policy
I wanted to get feedback from you guys about a recently implemented policy at a clinic I work at. Admin has started pushing PHQ-9s electronically to all patients on the mornings of their appointments and CSSRS screeners to all intakes on the mornings of their appointments. My worry is that these ask about suicidal ideation but that a proper risk assessment might not happen until much later in the day. Is this a potential liability risk? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

UCSF vs. Brown vs. Columbia (WL)
Hi everyone! I’m very grateful to have these options, but I'm struggling a bit with how to weigh different variables when making a final choice. I really appreciate any advice/insights/thoughts about other factors to consider. Some general background: I’m interested in academic medicine. I don’t know what specialty, but as of now thinking about psychiatry, peds, or internal medicine, probably with fellowship. I’m originally from New England and would love to end up back there long-term. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Solo Private Practice Folks: How do you handle coverage?
A work friend and I both have been thinking more about transitioning from a large organization to private practice. One of the things I get hung up on is coverage. With a W2 in a large organization, I punch in at 8 and punch out at 4 with no worries about getting called on nights/weekends. How does this work in a solo private practice? My colleague was thinking that it's sufficient to use the crisis line or present to the ED outside of clinical hours and for the psychiatrist to return... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Job offer
I work independently through my LLC and do autism evaluations and counseling, mostly with neurodivergent folks. The last few years, I’ve been working from my home office doing things via Telehealth. I began working collaboratively with a psychiatrist about 6 months ago. We hit it off as friends. Last week, he offered me a 1099 job through the group practice he owns. I can keep my practice and also work out of his office and get referrals from his group. The upsides are being around... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Columbia-Bassett vs. Yale (vs. UChicago and Tufts/BU/UVA)
I’m so grateful to have a successful cycle and I know I have a lot of wonderful choices! However, I am very indecisive! I was accepted to Tufts, BU, UVA, UChicago, Yale, and Columbia-Bassett. I was WL’d at Harvard and Penn. As of now, I have not accepted my spot on the WL’s, and I think my decision will ultimately be between Yale and Columbia-Bassett (although others are not off the table yet). I am interested in family medicine or psychiatry. A chill, authentic, collaborative vibe, with a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does 1-year medical LOA affect psychiatry residency match?
Hello, I am currently an M2 in an MD program that's been recently struggling academically due to some mental health issues. I've had to take about ~6 weeks of time for myself to work through my issues, which I think are being better managed now (i.e. some med changes, weekly therapy, etc). However, this time has cost me a lot in terms of feeling prepared for my clerkships/shelf exams. My school suggested there's the possibility of taking a Leave of Absence (i.e. medical, research, etc), in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

"Applying Broadly" for Psychiatry Residency
Hi all, As psych is becoming more competitive, I have been advised to "apply broadly." I am not a competitive applicant and have been told that any program I have a chance at should be on my list. Is this advice legit? It seems to me that sending my application to a random program in a region where I have no ties would be wasting money. Beyond stats, what does "have a chance at" really mean? Of course, the other advice a low-stats applicant receives is to dual apply. I am concerned... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Stanford vs Hopkins vs WashU
Hello, everyone! I have narrowed my choices down to three great programs, but I am really having trouble determining which to choose. Before I list the pros and cons of each, some information about me: I am most interested in either psychiatry or general surgery and would like to explore global health. I have a military scholarship that will cover a large amount of tuition, so money is not the top motivating factor. I have many interests outside of and tangential to medicine, and though I... Applying to residency and fellowship simultaneously
Not sure if this is the appropriate subform or if this question has been asked before, but I am an IM PGY2 who applied twice to psychiatry and didn't match. I settled on IM primarily to keep my career moving forward, have about a year of residency left, and was planning to apply to addiction medicine fellowship this summer with the hope of (potentially) trying one more time for psych during the one year fellowship. I like where I live a lot and believe I can match into addiction med... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WAMC and should I consider DO?
Hi guys. This is my first time posting here, and I apologize if I am posting in the wrong place. My inspiration to become a physician came from my aunt who is the best psychiatrist in the world and introduced me to this passion when I was young. I am an immigrant from Brazil, and completed both undergrad (UMBC, BA in Biological Sciences; GPA 3.47 with significant increase in grades in junior and senior year) and grad school (Columbia University, MS in Human Nutrition; GPA 3.9) in the US. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Recommendations for child psychiatry program that meet specific criteria?
Hello, I am interested in CAP programs that meet the following criteria: 1. All the inpatient and outpatient sites walking distance from each other 2. Great mentorship from involved faculty 3. No to minimal call/weekend hours Being located in a warm area is preferable not a requirement. It is more important that the first 3 criteria met, warm would be a bonus. Thanks very much! Is this legal?
I have a friend who took an admin position and she told me the new ops manager in our department is an idiot and is trying to make it so that if your patients cancel and you can’t fill the spots you use PTO for those spots. Is that even legal? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transferring residency programs within the same specialty
Hello, everyone. I am a PGY1 in a residency program where I barely see my attendings, do not get to discuss the assessment and plan for more than 1 or 2 min with them when I do get to see them, and have never been observed interviewing in the time I’ve been here. The program does not meet the basic expectations that I, rather naively, believed all residency programs would meet by default. In order to avoid getting into any trouble, I will not go into details unless someone offers help/advice... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Reapplying to psychiatry
Hello everyone, unfortunately I did not match into psych this cycle and I’m looking for advice on how to improve my application. I didn’t match into soap either which was a bummer. My school is allowing me to delay my graduation. Stats: pass step 1, 23X step 2. Red flag: had to remediate surgery rotation due to failed shelf exam. I have scheduled psych rotations through my school and 2 away rotations to instate residencies. I know I will have to apply to many more programs and probably dual... Didn't get chief resident spot. How upset should I be? Interested in Forensics
From everything I've read on here and reddit is that chief resident spot is the most overrated, extra-work you can take on for little CV benefit. Regardless I came to the decision to apply for our spot. I had no incentive previously, but recently significant other took a job at a location that has a forensic fellowship. I figured taking a chief spot could bolster the resume and give some extra responsibilities. The program I am in is not too intense. Ended up applying and found out...
