Why do the ca state prison jobs pay high and are always available ? Whats the catch?
I have never worked for a prison. Recruiters consistently tell me that the work load is very low, and its a dream job . Yet the jobs are consistently being advertised so I would guess its high turnover (for psychiatrists). Making $300/hr in a stress free low patient load job sounds tempting but literally anyone I have spoken to has nothing but discouraging words to say. The cons range from "not being able to check your phone, feeling locked in like you are in a prison too, the ever present... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

The C/L Bashing Thread
I've posted variably in the depths of this forum my disdain for C/L. Applause for Glaucomflecken again. This skit encapsulates the pain of C/L, and when a resident the attendings telling you to just please the primary services and just go do the consult. The time I wasted in residency with consults for "patient cried" etc. This skit just brought flash backs. "patient is schizophrenic" <--stable, no symptoms, regular med compliance, in hospital for surgery or something... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Curious about potential Texas residency programs "rivalry"
Hi all! I am an incoming MS1 so a total newbie and very grateful for making it into medical school. My goal is psychiatry due to past work related to the field. I've been looking at Match Lists for the past few years out of curiosity and I am noticing (and someone mentioned it at some point during a presentation) that some programs don't seem to match students from other programs. Particularly, I have heard and noticed that UT Houston or Baylor programs don't match many students from UTMB... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Vituity
I’m still finding ER psych (dedicated, not a component of CL) weirdly difficult to land in SoCal (mostly county places, of course). Maybe not that weird because SoCal employers seem slow to respond unless it’s an annoying outside recruiter with an undesirable job. I still have to complete a year of PSLF payments. Not sure if Vituity counts with qualifying employer rule changes in CA (topic for another thread). I don’t see a lot of old posts about Vituity, but anecdotally they (recruiters... Should I Ask For LoR Now or Later?
Hello, I am an MS3 right now who fully committed to psych within the last few months. Psych has been on my radar but I didn't commit until MS3, so I might not have the best LoR's right now. I honored my psych rotation at the beginning of MS3 (now towards the end of MS3) and had a pretty good relationship with one of the attendings, but I haven't seen them in a while. I only saw them during the rotation to be honest and not anytime after, and it's not like the two of us were super close... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

No Need for Utoxes Anymore
So I'm...ambivalent about the Goldwater Rule, but this is some seriously stretched stuff. Psychiatrist sees signs Biden was medicated for State of the Union performance A psychiatrist who has worked with elderly dementia patients said President Biden exhibited signs of stimulant use to mask cognitive decline in his amped-up, aggressive State of the Union speech on Thursday. www.washingtontimes.com (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Didnt Match Psych
I am a 4th year medical student who happened to not get into psych. Applied very broadly 100+ programs. Only took level and level 2 score was mid 500s. No red flags on my app. I had 10+ interviews and did not match. This was not something I was expecting and was caught off guard. I have had many interviews in SOAP now for categorical IM. I personally am not a fan of the location of these programs and not a fan of the programs I interviewed at in general (many HCAs). I am not sure what to do... Match week
Congratulations to everyone who found out they matched yesterday! To anyone who didn't, I wish you best of luck in SOAP this week. The pressure isn't exactly the same from the advising side but I still let out a big sigh of relief when I heard all our students were matched this year! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Culture of medicine and time off
I’m wondering if this is just something personally engrained in me or if others can relate. I’m in my last year of psychiatry residency, recently had abdominal pain, vomiting and went to the ED. Had elevated LFTs, bili, lipase, WBC. Ended up with a 3 day hospital stay, ERCP with 2 stents placed and a cholecystectomy. I’ve taken no FMLA or extended time off my entire residency and asked for 2 weeks to recoup which ended up being granted. I’m 3 days out and feeling so incredibly guilty. I... What to do on 7 off?
Just took a 7 on 7 off position in the Southeast. I am looking for extra work during my week off. Thought would be to pick up 2-3 days during the week. I've tried looking for PRN telepsych positions and couldn't find any specific ones. Also thought about correctional positions that are flexible. I don't see how starting my own outpatient telehealth would work because of my limited availability. Outpatient is not my preference either. The hospital I am working at has occasional extra shifts... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Interesting PRN job
Hi all, I am trying to find a job to supplement my fellowship income. I spoke to a recruiter today who described a job in which I would evaluate parents to see whether or not they can regain custody of their children. It is $600 / patient with evals taking 1 hour + supposedly 1 hour of paperwork. I have very little idea about what doing this would entail, but my initial impression is that it sounds risky. Eg, if I give the parent the okay and they harm their child, I could be liable for... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pushback from other clinicians with benzo tapers
Last year a local independent psychiatrist retired who was heavy handed when it comes to poly pharmacy and controlled substances. I inherited a patient on 12 mg of Klonopin. Made it very clear at initial appointment my plan would be taper and she was free to seek a second opinion. She wanted to move forward. Without getting into specifics it came to my attention that another provider she sees was telling her to advocate for herself and push back on my taper plan. I have been tapering slowly... Psych-cations and a Med Student's Slight Identity Crisis
TLDR: The culture of psychiatry rotations at my school has made me scared of what psych residency might look like for an uncompetitive psych applicant who is maybe too idealistic. Greetings all, I’m a DO student finishing up my third year. Before med school, I had several years of experience in dual diagnosis treatment, as well as with SMI in my immediate family; I loved this work and I came to med school to become a psychiatrist. However, after completing two psych rotations, I feel... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
