Serum calcium among women with pre-eclampsia and normotensive pregnant women in kawempe national referral hospital; a case control study
Introduction: Serum calcium homeostasis is critical in regulation of blood pressure. Research results on Serum Calcium among Pre-eclampsia patients are inconsistent. Aims: Determining the association of serum Calcium levels with pre-eclampsia and compare the mean serum calcium levels of patients with pre-eclampsia and normotensive pregnant women. Brain tumors in pregnancy, symptoms, diagnosis and our cases
Primary brain tumors during pregnancy are rare. Clinical symptoms are non specific for example cephalea, nausea, vomiting or epileptic seizures, some symptoms can be easily confused with pregnancy symptoms or complications such as vomiting in early pregnancy or eclampsia. It is obligatory to say that symptoms of brain tumors are the same in both pregnant and non pregnant patients. The diagnosis is established in cooperation between obstetrician, neurologists and radiologists. Treatment of brain tumors in pregnancy is a matter of a multidisciplinary team, which should determine the risks and benefits of treatment for both m...

Challenges encountered during the implementation of the project Self-monitoring of Blood Pressure and Urinalysis by Pregnant Mothers in Cumberland infirmary. NCIC
Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy affect approximately 10% of pregnant individuals globally, and are among the leading causes of pregnancy-related mortality and morbidities. Pre-eclampsia is a condition that typically occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is a combination of raised blood pressure (hypertension), protein in your urine (proteinuria). Regular blood pressure checks are crucial to the early detection of pre-eclampsia and are associated with better maternal and neonatal outcomes. Circulating microRNAs Mi 517 and Mi 526 as novel biomarkers in the detection of hypertension and preeclampsia in first trimester
Background: Up to 10% of pregnancies can become complicated by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, which include preexisting and gestational hypertension, eclampsia, and preeclampsia. MicroRNAs have been observed to play a major role in various physiological processes, for instance programmed cell death, cell division, pregnancy development, and proliferation. Maternal and perinatal outcomes of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy: Insights from the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Vietnam
ConclusionOur study showed lower prevalence of stillbirth, perinatal mortality, and maternal complication compared to some previous studies. Regular antenatal care and early detection of abnormal signs during pregnancy help to devise an appropriate monitoring and treatment strategies for each women with HDP. (Source: PLoS One)

A mutual comparison of pregnancy outcomes between different conception modes: a propensity score matching based retrospective cohort study
ConclusionBoth OI and ART are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. ART induced comparable negative effects with OI on gestational complications, birth weight, and premature birth (<37 weeks). However, ART resulted in a higher risk of placental problems than group NC and OI. The incidence of birth before 34 weeks of gestation in the ART group tends to be higher than in the OI group, but not statistically significant. The side effects of ART may originate from OI. Maternal body mass index and necrotizing enterocolitis: A case-control study
DiscussionOur results did not show a significant association of NEC with maternal obesity. The percent of overweight and obese mothers prior to pregnancy and at delivery was significantly higher in our population than the national average and may be responsible for the limited ability to reveal any association between maternal obesity and NEC. Autoimmune Implications in a Patient with Graves' Hyperthyroidism, Pre-eclampsia with Severe Features, and Primary Aldosteronism
Conclusions: This patient manifested severe GD with antibodies undetectable by conventional TSI and TSH receptor assays and accelerated hypertension from PA simultaneously. These conditions were successfully treated separately by spironolactone and thyroidectomy. Autoimmune PA was considered likely given the clinical picture. The diagnosis of PA should be considered in hypertension with GD.PMID:38256430 | PMC:PMC10820415 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60010170 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Factors influencing primary care access, utilisation and quality of management for patients living with hypertension in West Africa: a scoping review protocol
Introduction Hypertension, one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in West Africa, can be well managed with good primary care. This scoping review will explore what is documented in the literature about factors that influence primary care access, utilisation and quality of management for patients living with hypertension in West Africa. Methods and analysis The scoping review will employ the approach described by Arksey and O’Malley (2005) . The approach has five stages: (1) formulating the research questions, (2) identifying relevant studies, (3) selecting eligible studies, (4) charting the data and (5)...

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 139: Leptin and Leptin Receptor Polymorphisms in Infants and Their Parents: Correlation with Preterm Birth
iliano Bergallo It has been proven that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in LEP and LEPR genes could predispose individuals to an increased risk of pregnancy adverse outcomes (PAOs) such as recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) and pre-eclampsia. Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of infant mortality. We decided to investigate the correlation between PTB and LEP and LEPR SNPs. The study cohort included families who underwent spontaneous PTB and control samples of families who had at-term-born (≥37 weeks of gestational age) children. Swabs were performed by rubbing the sticky end for about 30 s on the gu...

Neuroimaging Features in Eclamptic Encephalopathy and their Correlation with Clinical and Laboratory Parameters: a Prospective Observational Study
ConclusionPatients with imaging abnormalities have a severe form of disease in eclampsia. Neuroimaging in provisionally diagnosed cases of eclampsia will modify the management and hence prognosis in these patients. (Source: The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology of India)

Effects of calcium supplementation on changes in the IL2, IL4, IL6, IL10 axes and oxidative stress in pregnant women at risk for pre-eclampsia
Pregnant women with hypertensive disorders are at increased risk for inflammatory diseases and oxidative stress. The dilemma raised by the best dosage of calcium supplementation on these factors is evident. Th... (Source: BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth)

Human uterine natural killer cells regulate differentiation of extravillous trophoblast early in pregnancy
Cell Stem Cell. 2024 Feb 1;31(2):181-195.e9. doi: 10.1016/j.stem.2023.12.013. Epub 2024 Jan 17.ABSTRACTIn humans, balanced invasion of trophoblast cells into the uterine mucosa, the decidua, is critical for successful pregnancy. Evidence suggests that this process is regulated by uterine natural killer (uNK) cells, but how they influence reproductive outcomes is unclear. Here, we used our trophoblast organoids and primary tissue samples to determine how uNK cells affect placentation. By locating potential interaction axes between trophoblast and uNK cells using single-cell transcriptomics and in vitro modeling of these int...
