Maternal outcomes of pre-eclampsia with severe features and its determinants at Abebech Gobena Mothers and Childrens Health and Saint Peters Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions The prevalence of unfavourable maternal outcomes was high compared with other studies in Ethiopia. Maternal age, residence, occupation, blood pressure on admission and severe headache have shown a statistically significant association with unfavourable maternal outcomes. Socioeconomic development and early identification of severe signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia are needed to reduce unfavourable outcomes. (Source: BMJ Open)

Early HbA1c Levels as a Predictor of Adverse Obstetric Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Women with high early HbA1c levels below the range of diabetes presented an increased risk of pregnancy complications such as macrosomia, LGA, and pre-eclampsia. An early HbA1c threshold of >39 mmol/mol (5.7%) showed the strongest association with pregnancy complications.PMID:38541957 | DOI:10.3390/jcm13061732 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

Trends and disparities in perinatal health outcomes among women from refugee backgrounds in Victoria, Australia: A population-based study
CONCLUSION: Refugee background was associated with unfavourable perinatal outcomes, highlighting the negative influence of refugee status on perinatal health. This evidences the need to address the unique healthcare requirements of this vulnerable population to enhance the well-being of mothers and newborns. Implementing targeted interventions and policies is crucial to meet the healthcare requirements of women of refugee backgrounds. Collaborative efforts between healthcare organisations, government agencies and non-governmental organisations are essential in establishing comprehensive support systems to assist refugee wo...

Higher Circulating Lymphocytes and the Incidence of Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia
J Pregnancy. 2024 Mar 19;2024:8834312. doi: 10.1155/2024/8834312. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTExcessive immune activation contributes to the onset of early dysfunction of the maternal-fetal interface, and it is closely linked to the development of pre-eclampsia. However, the effect of specific immune cells on the risk of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia remains controversial. We investigated the causal relationship between immune cells and pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. For exposure, we extracted genetic variants associated with immune cell-related traits, and for outcomes, we used summary genetic data of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. A ...

Expression of long non-coding RNA GAS5 by first trimester screening predicts the occurrence of gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia
ConclusionElevated serum GAS5 could serve as an effective diagnostic biomarker in discriminating GH patients from healthy people by first trimester screening. Detection of serum GAS5 level has a certain predictive value for PE. (Source: Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics)

Prepregnancy body mass index and other risk factors for early-onset and late-onset haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome: a population-based retrospective cohort study in British Columbia, Canada
Conclusions Prepregnancy BMI is positively associated with HELLP syndrome and the association is stronger with early-onset HELLP syndrome. Associations with early-onset and late-onset HELLP syndrome differed for some risk factors, suggesting possible differences in aetiological mechanisms. (Source: BMJ Open)
