No EMTALA in Portugal, sadly
Health minister quits after pregnant tourist dies - BBC News Portugal's Marta Temido was criticised for closing some natal units, forcing risky transfers for women. www.bbc.com I know many here have their problems w EMTALA but active labor transfers are dangerous as the Portuguese are finding out tragically. Perhaps more to the story (eclampsia? PE?) but highlights what EMTALA got right. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pre-Eclampsia and platelets
Patient comes in for induction of labor for pre-eclampsia without severe features. They get a CBC on arrival. Platelets are 300. How long is that number valid for you for neuraxial placement? What’s your cut off time for needing a repeat draw? What if pre-E with severe features? There’s no institutional policy at my place, just provider discretion. Just trying to get a feel for what others are doing. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
