And we're at it again -- psychologist prescribing in Oregon
Hey SDN psychiatry world -- apparently Oregon is yet again going to be facing a psychologist prescribing bill. I believe this happened in 2010 and was the source of a huge discussion on this board back in that day. Details are scant, but it's real and per the rumor mill trying to pushed through quietly. I've heard limited details about education requirements for these prescribing psychologists (grr) but have heard that it will only be an option for employed rather than self employed... slide scanning: what do you use?
Anyone out there digitizing slides? I'm interesting in buying something that will do at least 20X (preferably 40X) without spending $30,000. There are plenty of pricey whole-slide imaging "systems" out there, but surely there are some desktop film scanners that are up to the task? How about the Nikon Coolscan units? What are my chances? constructive criticism
Hello everybody, thank you in advance for taking the time to scan over my package and provide feedback. I decided to apply this 2017 cycle before taking the MCAT for a second time for a higher score, but I believe I made a major mistake by applying so late (primary submitted in August, mcat test in September), a mistake I have learned from. Although I am still waiting for responses from 4 more schools, I am being proactive in preparing my application for the 2018 cycle and would appreciate... Letter of Recommendation
I am currently studying for the OAT and planning to take it sometimes in May or June, as application opens July 1st. I have 4 people in mind that I am going to ask for a letter of rec.: 1) My boss. I was a work-study student in a physiology lab for 1.5 years. She is the lab manager and a researcher for the same lab. 2) My optometrist. I haven't started shadowing for him yet, but he has said yes to that I can shadow him. 3) My professor that I took 2 courses with in Scandinavian studies. He... Use of ED ultrasound
I wanted to 'poll the audience' to see what others think about use of US in the ED. Of course it's helpful for the quick FAST or to place a central line, but I mean beyond that. I trained at a time when it was just on the up and up but they're now using teaching ER doctors to do the full gallbladder, DVT, and all pelvic scans on their own (amongst others). While it's not beyond our level of comprehension or particularly complex, I do hesitate to a) take the time to do a full scan when I'm... Use of ED ultrasound (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Safeway new computer system
We just rolled out a new system at our store... It seems really slow and one of our computers couldn't handle the load so it shutdown along with the scanner that was attatched to it. Anyody else had similar experiences with the new system? Does workflow get any better with time? Today we only checked off 150 scripts but it felt like I checked off 300 (Source: Student Doctor Network)

explaining radiation risk (CT, etc)
what are your go-to lines to explain relative risk of CT radiation? i've heard people say "equal to about one year background radiation" to get someone to agree, and "1-2% of all cancers are caused by CT" do you have separate stump speeches for pro-scan and against-scan?
