Working in healthcare economics as a physician
I’ve had something on my mind for a few days. I’m premed and applied for MD/PhD programs in bioengineering (medical imaging) research. But something made me rethink my decision to pursue medicine: a few days ago I got the bill for my Dexa bone density test (I’ve always had irregular menses and low estrogen levels, so they were checking my bone density; but that’s irrelevant to this story). The bill for the scan, a glorified x-ray, was $700. It literally took less than 10 minutes to run... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is radiology like taking a test everyday?
Med student interested in radiology. Is a full day of reading scans similar to taking a full-length board exam? Would you say it’s mentally less or more challenging than answering step 1/2ck questions? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Top Sports Medicine Fellowships for US Training
Hello all! I know this has been asked before, but as we all know programs change over time. At this point, what are the top sports medicine fellowships that offer high level diagnostic and interventional ultrasound training? Which programs offer a formalized ultrasound curriculum with eventual progression to advanced procedures and performing complete diagnostic scans? Thank you for your time and input! Reckless QV2 speeds...you cant even see the pill!
How are rphs so casually verifying #90, 180, etc, 540 pills with barely even a glance at the terribly blurry photos? Most don't even bother zooming in and spend about 3 seconds looking over 180 pills (60 pills a second? Really?) I understand the technician scans the bottle before pouring out to count, but I'd assume that kind of defense wouldn't hold up if an error slips through and it gets legal between you/BOP/patient/employer as they would just point the finger at you and say it's your... Misfill
Had my first misfill. Not even sure if its considered a misfill. Someone else’s drug was bagged with the patient’s bag. I may have been distracted, not sure exactly how that happened. The tech who checked patient out did not scan out all the tags and didnt catch the error at the register. According the patient, she did not take any of the drug and returned it. Would this be considered a misfill and how does your pharmacy handle something like this? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cancer risk in CT?
Had an attending comment today about how we’re going to cause cancer in a patient because she’s had 30 CT and/pelv scans over the past few years for abdominal pain. Well I agree that it’s excessive to say the least, the patient is 63 years old. Trying to find data on this in an older population. I keep finding stuff showing relationships to CT scanning and eventual development of malignancy in peds, but essentially nothing after age 45. Most stuff seems pretty vague too. But maybe my... Hating Radiology Rotation
Current med student who was set on Rads before this elective rotation. However, I hate the rotation I am on. I have to just watch a resident read scans for 4-5 hrs. It is so boring that I dread going in everyday. I honestly have no idea what they are telling me half the time either. I like the tech apsect though, and the fact that it is all mental power and the only difference b/w you and ur peers is thinking. Is this normal to hate this rotation... did you guys enjoy ur radiology rotations... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

S/p sbrt lung ca, suv 1.1 "suspicious"
Octogenarian s/p SBRT mid 2019 for empirically Dx'd T1 lung ca. PreRT SUV 2.8. New radiology services in town - in-house at a new med onc facility. Pt goes there for heme issue, med onc there sees she has h/o SBRT, he cancels the CT chest I had scheduled for pt and gets a PET at their in-house scanner instead. Despite numerous CT's and PET's done at another facility they use no prior studies for comparison. I have never heard of the rad they use for reading their reports. He lives in... Pyriform Sinus
80yo male with history of controlled a-fib presents with BRBPR in Aug 2021 so bad he "almost passed out." H and H 11 and 31. Some Hospitals Charge Up to 10 Times More for Medical Scans Than Others, Study Finds
No surprises here but I imagine the magnitude of the price spreads seen here are probably the same in rad onc. I hadn't seen before that fine for not releasing prices is going up from $109,500/year to $2,000,000/year, which is still a rounding error for the MDACC of the world. https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/10.1148/radiol.2021211948 Some Hospitals Charge Up to 10 Times More for Medical Scans Than Others, Study Finds The report, based on once-secret pricing data and published in the journal Radiology, found that thousands of hos...

outside biopsy path reports at your institution before surgery
Isn't it standard of care for a surgeon to scan in a patient's diagnostic pathology report into the hospital EMR where the patient is having surgery, if the diagnostic pathology report was performed elsewhere? Isn't this usually required in hospital bylaws or something, in order for good patient care? (Currently working locums in area where most surgeons are independent. previously worked in large hospital system where all surgeons were employees and most diagnostic biopsies went straight...
