Deciding on 3 options re:wisest path toward opening Solo Pain practice
Hey folks, This is a question for those of you who are either currently Solo Pain docs , have worked as solo in the past, or have a solid handle/experience on the business aspect of Pain management. I’ve worked in academic Pain practice and will leave that job soon. I did some locum in the past. I bill for my own visits and procedures, not much else in terms of managing/financial stuff at that job. I want to go solo in the next 1-2 years, but I don’t have much experience with the business... I want to do it all... Is that too much?
I'm an MS4 applying PM&R this cycle. My interests are mainly in the outpatient setting. I like MSK, injections, diagnostic/injection US, botox injections, pain management and love sports patients. I am very well read in chronic pain management (for an MS4) and I am 99% sure that I will pursue this fellowship after residency (and yes, I genuinely enjoy pain, I didn't just see the big $$$). So my question is, can these different domains comingle in a PM&R practice? For example, could I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Those in FM, what would you like to learn/know about Pain Medicine?
Hi y'all, I plan on giving a presentation to a large local family medicine group and I'm reaching out to see what YOU would like to learn from someone who is in pain management. This may be one presentation or a short series. Ideally, this would be useful and practical. So, think more 'what is the best muscle relaxant' and less of the esoteric 'different opioid subtypes receptors.' I hope that made sense. Below are some ideas. I'm open to hearing from YOU. Which muscle relaxant to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Interventional Pain Med Questions & Future
Hi interventional pain physicians, I’m currently a medical student in the US and after countless hours of shadowing (in clinic, OR etc.) and doing a ton of research on what the field is like, I’m pretty set on interventional pain. I’m fortunate enough to know a director of pain management at a local hospital through mutual friends so I’ve seen a ton about the field in terms of witnessing procedures, consults etc. and had a few questions that I wanted to get different perspectives on. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Offering to Expand VA Pain Services?
I know even getting accepted/credentialed to start a VA job that is being recruited for can take a long long time. However, I noticed the city I am looking to practice pain management in has no VA hospital, but has a "VA Clinic" where they have ophtho/gyn/GI/derm/primary care, etc. Is there any chance I could reach out to the VA and ask if they would open a pain management office within that clinic to provide pain management to local vets? Closest real VA hospital is a couple hours away... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Question about MGMA Data
I know this has been discussed previously but I read conflicting info. The comp figure listed for pain management in MGMA, does this refer to base only or base plus wRVU productivity above the base/performance incentives? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

referral for pre-procedure medications only
Hey just wanted to see what the general consensus is. We had a patient who called who wanted to be seen, as primary care physician wanted the patient to go to pain management for just pre-procedure pain medication and anxiolytic. Sounds like the patient only wants 1-2 tablets of each. Assuming you have room on your schedule, would you see this patient knowing that is all the patient wants and that the patient will not be following back up with you? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ankle blocks for DPN
Met a well trained doc who routinely performs bilateral ankle blocks (0.75% bup, betamethasone, ketorolac) for PN involving the feet. Reports several months of relief. Any similar experiences? Early in my career pain management consisted of determining the sensory innervation of the area of complaint and then doing a “nerve block” with local anesthetic and steroid. Over time I’ve moved away from that but perhaps I need to reconsider? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
