Why is Anesthesiology not competitive?
I have seen older threads about this topic from almost 10 years ago, and I wanted to ask why now, in 2017, and going forward, why isn't anesthesiology more competitive to match into? Residency average hours about 60 per week according to FREIDA, starting salary around 400k according to MGMA. Opportunities to do a fellowship in pain management. I see job postings for 40hr/week 400k with no weekends and minimal call. Opportunities for OR work or an outpatient pain clinic. I've shadowed in... Why is Anesthesiology not competitive? CIII Filling (Specifically Suboxone)
A patient on Suboxone, prescribed by a Pain Management Specialist with a Buprenorphine Waiver, who doesnt fall into the normal box and has a complex medical history, meaning quitting all other substances with dependency potential is not an option, has landed in a difficult situation. The MD was prescribing Suboxone and Percocet (Yes I know, that is counterintuitive, but that's not the focus of this question). Other MDs have been prescribing Phenobarbital, Fiorocet, Lunesta, Diastat, all MDs... CIII Filling (Specifically Suboxone) (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Question from a PCP
I'm curious as to how many fellowship trained Pain Medicine physicians actually prescribe medications, or if what we are seeing in my area is the norm? Basically, referral to a "Pain Management" physician is futile, as unless the patient is wanting a procedure, they are refused any treatment, or denied. We have a significant population on higher doses of chronic narcs that many of us (PCP's) simply are not comfortable managing. These are almost always "inherited" patients....meaning, the... Sean Mackey on Pain Medicine's Civil War
https://www.statnews.com/2017/01/17/chronic-pain-management-opioids/ “There’s almost a McCarthyism on this, that’s silencing so many people who are simply scared,” said Dr. Sean Mackey, who oversees Stanford University’s pain management program. “The thing is, we all want black and white. We don’t do well with nuance. And this is an incredibly nuanced issue.” (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Currently in fellowship and hating it.....thoughts?
Hello all. It is not my intention to insult anyone here. I came to my pain management fellowship through anesthesia. It is not what I expected (or hoped, I guess). While I enjoy the procedures, especially SCS, there is so much of this fellowship I really don't like, including the tedious monotony of clinic (I hate doing H&P after H&P) and the chronic pain patients and their defeatist attitudes just bum me out. I know some of the things I don't like about fellowship go away or get better... Currently in fellowship and hating it.....thoughts? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
