Endovascular thrombectomy for treatment of isolated posterior cerebral artery occlusion: a real-world analysis of hospitalizations in the United States
ConclusionRetrospective analysis of a large administrative registry in the Unites States demonstrates an association of EVT with favorable outcomes following IPCA occlusion, without concomitant risk of hemorrhagic transformation or mortality. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

The effects of cerebral pressure autoregulation status and CPP levels on cerebral metabolism in pediatric traumatic brain injury
ConclusionsIncreased levels of CMD lactate and LPR in children with severe TBI appears to be related to disturbed CPA (PRx). Increased lactate and LPR also seems to be associated with actual CPP levels  ≥ 70 mmHg. However, higher lactate and LPR values were also seen when actual CPP was above CPPopt. Higher CPP appears harmful when CPP is above the upper limit of pressure autoregulation. The findings indicate that CPPopt guided CPP management may have potential in pediatric TBI. Limited prognostic role of routine serum markers (AP, CEA, LDH and NSE) in oligorecurrent prostate cancer patients undergoing PSMA-radioguided surgery
ConclusionThe assessment of AP, CEA, LDH, and NSE before salvage PSMA-RGS showed no prognostic impact. Further studies are needed to identify possible predictors that will optimize patient selection for salvage PSMA-RGS. (Source: World Journal of Urology)

Temporal lobe injury with middle fossa approach to intracanalicular vestibular schwannomas: a systematic review
AbstractThere are several surgical approaches for vestibular schwannoma (VS) resection. However, management has gradually shifted from microsurgical resection, toward surveillance and radiosurgery. One of the arguments against microsurgery via the middle fossa approach (MFA) is the risk of temporal lobe retraction injury or sequelae. Here, we sought to evaluate the incidence of temporal lobe retraction injury or sequela from a MFA via a systematic review of the existing literature. This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Re...

To be thorough or tailored: influence of the arachnoid dissection range on the surgical outcomes of microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm
ConclusionThorough dissection as an initial aim for all cases was not recommended in MVD for HFS, arachnoid dissection should be tailored to achieving safety and effectiveness during the procedure. (Source: Neurosurgical Review)

Effect of low-dose ketamine infusion on opioid consumption in children undergoing open cardiac surgery: a randomized controlled double-blind study
Open cardiac surgery in the pediatric population is associated with severe metabolic and neurohumeral responses that adversely affect the cardiorespiratory system, resulting in a high risk of morbidity and mortality. 1,2,3 Up to 75% of patients who underwent cardiac surgery experienced moderate to severe postoperative pain that arises mainly from sternotomy incision and to a lesser extent from the sites of mediastinal drainage tubes. 4 (Source: Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia)

Association between the quantity of stroke care units and the complement of neurosurgical and neurology specialists in Japan: A retrospective study
Initial treatment in a stroke unit (SU) can reduce the mortality of stroke victims, increase the rate of discharge to home, and decrease the amount of time spent in the hospital. The effectiveness of an SU has also been proven in a meta-analysis. Stroke units have been established in various locations in Europe since 1990, and the medical system for managing the acute phase of stroke has improved1, 2. The Japanese Stroke Association recommends in its Stroke Treatment Guidelines 2021 that acute stroke patients should be treated by a multidisciplinary stroke team in an SU that provides intensive care and early rehabilitation...

Health-related quality of life, work ability and disability among individuals with persistent post-dural puncture headache
ConclusionThis study stresses the burden of pPDPH in terms of substantial disability, limited quality of life, mental health concerns, and significant impact on the ability to work. The study highlights the long-term impact of pPDPH on individuals, emphasizing the need for timely diagnosis and effective treatment. It underscores the complexity of managing pPDPH and calls for further research into its long-term effects on patient health and HRQoL. (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)

Single versus multiple reoperations for recurrent intracranial meningiomas
ConclusionThe extent of resection and the multicentric-diffuse pattern of regrowth at first recurrence are the main risk factors for multiple recurrences and reoperations. Repeated reoperations might be considered even in patients with extensive recurrent tumors before the anaplastic transformation occurs. In such cases, even partial tumor resections followed by radiation therapy may allow long survival in good clinical conditions. (Source: Journal of Neuro-Oncology)

Stereotactic radiosurgery for intracranial cavernous malformations of the deep-seated locations: systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionSRS appears effective in reducing hemorrhage rates for deep-seated ICMs. The risk of symptomatic radiation injury is low. Given the high risk of surgical morbidity, SRS is a reasonable treatment option for patients with deep-seated ICMs with at least one prior hemorrhage. (Source: Neurosurgical Review)
