Primary afferents of trigeminal autonomic reflex may not be nociceptive: A case report
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to popular belief, in the patient who was pain-free after percutaneous balloon compression, the transiently overactivated nerve fibers that led to hypersalivation were not nociceptive afferents of the trigeminal nerve.PMID:38650552 | DOI:10.5137/1019-5149.JTN.34594-21.1 (Source: Turkish Neurosurgery)

Systematic review of treatment for unruptured intracranial aneurysms: clipping vs coiling
CONCLUSION: The study showed that coiling was associated with a lower occlusion rate, shorter hospital stay, lower bleeding risk, and lower short-term mortality and morbidity compared to clipping. In terms of ischemia risk, 1 year mortality and morbidity, coiling and clipping bear similar risk. We suppose that clipping may have a better outcome than coiling in the long term especially for young patients. Further research is needed to confirm our conclusion.PMID:38650551 | DOI:10.5137/1019-5149.JTN.23729-18.1 (Source: Turkish Neurosurgery)

Transfer of Motor Fascicle From the Ulnar Nerve to the Axillary Nerve by Posterior Access. New Approach
We describe a new technique of transferring the motor branch ulnar nerve (UN) to the axillary nerve (AN) by posterior approach. Three patients with C5, C6, and C7 brachial plexus injury were operated. By supraclavicular approach, the spinal accessory was transferred to the suprascapular nerve. By posterior approach in the arm, the AN was identified within the quadrilateral space, and the UN was identified medially with intrafascicular dissection of a motor fascicle, which is lifted to 4 cm in length and transferred to AN. By medial approach, a motor branch from the median nerve is transferred to the biceps nerve. At a foll...

Radio-Guided Surgery with a New-Generation β-Probe for Radiolabeled Somatostatin Analog, in Patients with Small Intestinal Neuroendocrine Tumors
CONCLUSION: This study reports optimal accuracy in detecting lesions of SI-NETs using the intraoperative RGS approach with a novel β-probe. The method was found to be safe, feasible, and easily reproducible in daily clinical practice, with minimal radiation exposure for the staff. RGS might potentially improve radical resection rates in SI-NETs.CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION: 68Ga-DOTATOC Radio-Guided Surgery with β-Probe in GEP-NET (RGS GEP-NET) [NCT0544815; https://classic.CLINICALTRIALS: gov/ct2/show/NCT05448157 ].PMID:38652200 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15277-x (Source: Ann Oncol)

Transversus Abdominis Plane Block versus Epidural Anesthesia for Pain Management Post-Caesarean Delivery: A Pilot Study
CONCLUSION: The TAP block proves advantageous in mitigating postoperative pain for women post-caesarean delivery, particularly in the initial 6 postpartum hours. This relief promotes early mother-infant bonding and facilitates breastfeeding.PMID:38650746 | PMC:PMC11033210 | DOI:10.2147/LRA.S444947 (Source: Local and Regional Anesthesia)

Prognostic Factors of Spinal Intramedullary Hemangioblastoma : Analysis of Surgical Outcomes and Tumor Characteristics
CONCLUSION: In intramedullary spinal cord hemangioblastomas, cases located ventrally had a higher incidence of neurological deterioration following surgery than those located dorsally or in intramedullary extramedullary cases. Ventrally located hemangioblastomas were larger than those in other locations. They were mainly supplied by the anterior spinal artery in VHL patients.PMID:38650430 | DOI:10.3340/jkns.2023.0221 (Source: Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society)

Prominent Neurosurgery Books: How they Defined the Era of Modern Neurosurgery in the 19th Century
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the advancements in patient care, anesthesia and sterile techniques, surgical medical branches showed rapid development in the 1800s. During this period, cerebral localization concept changed the comprehension and approach in neurosurgery and opened the gate of a new era in the field of neurological surgery unlike other branches and helped to establish modern neurosurgery. 19th century surgeons became able to operate on more complex cases with more advanced techniques. Knowledge of published pioneer papers and books help understanding of emergence of neurological surgery as a separate discipline.PMID:38...

Institutional Experience of Post Traumatic Posterior Fossa Extra Dural Hematoma: A Prospective Longitudinal Study
CONCLUSION: In patients with a clot volume of 15 cm3 and GCS of 15 at presentation with no mass effect and absence of TPF, a conservative trial under strict clinicoradiological monitoring in a neuro-critical multidisciplinary setting can be offered with good results. In cases of altered GCS, findings of a TPF, or clinicoradiological deterioration, immediate surgery is warranted.PMID:38650570 | DOI:10.5137/1019-5149.JTN.44330-23.2 (Source: Turkish Neurosurgery)

Full Endoscopic anterior cervical discectomy versus anterior cervical discectomy with fusion. A systematic review
Conclusion A definitive conclusion cannot be drawn. Single-level AECD seems to have results equivalent to ACDF, presenting even some benefits. Technical limitations combined with required surgical skills and experience should be considered. We recommend cautious employment in anticipation of future updates.PMID:38650569 | DOI:10.5137/1019-5149.JTN.44424-23.2 (Source: Turkish Neurosurgery)

Two-step effective Onyx embolization from the occipital artery for the treatment of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistula: a technical note
CONCLUSIONS: Prior embolization using Onyx or coil of the distal OA helped prevent Onyx from unexpected embolization through the subcutaneous branches that were not associated with the shunt, thereby leading to effective embolization. This new two-step embolization technique from the OA may improve the obliteration rate of DAVFs with OA feeders using TAE with Onyx.PMID:38650568 | DOI:10.5137/1019-5149.JTN.44648-23.1 (Source: Turkish Neurosurgery)
