Successful therapy of complex regional pain syndrome after hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome: a case report
ConclusionComplex regional pain syndrome does occur after elective hip arthroscopy. Disproportionate postoperative pain or other symptoms raising suspicion of complex regional pain syndrome should be promptly evaluated and treated through a multimodal approach. Postless hip arthroscopy may be advantageous. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

36-Year-Old Woman With Progressive Dyspnea, Cough, and Chills
A 36-year-old woman presented to the hospital for evaluation of progressively worsening dyspnea on exertion. She had a pertinent medical history of anxiety, polycystic ovary syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis work-up with her primary care provider. Her home medications included escitalopram, gabapentin, glucosamine-chondroitin, loratadine, multivitamin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen. She reported 2 weeks of progressively worsening dyspnea on exertion with associated nonproductive cough, chills, sore throat, and palpitations. (Source: Mayo Clinic Proceedings)

Combination chemotherapy in rodents: a model for chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain and pharmacological screening
AbstractChemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP) remains a therapeutic challenge, with no US-FDA approved drugs or effective treatments available. Despite significant progress in unravelling the pathophysiology of CINP, the clinical translation of this knowledge into tangible outcome remains elusive. Here, we employed behavioural and pharmacological approaches to establish and validate a novel combination-based chemotherapeutic model of peripheral neuropathy. Male Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to chemotherapy administration followed by assessment of pain behaviour at different time-points post-chemotherapy. Paclit...

Adverse drug events associated with nortriptyline compared with paroxetine and alternative medications in an older adult population: a retrospective cohort study in Southern California
Conclusions Compared with therapeutic alternatives, nortriptyline was found to represent a lower risk for falls, fractures and syncope, versus comparator medications, except for a few instances that had equivalent risk. The risk for these adverse events from paroxetine was comparable to the alternative medications. (Source: BMJ Open)

Bergenin ameliorates chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain in rats by modulating TRPA1/TRPV1/NR2B signalling
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Dec;125(Pt A):111100. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.111100. Epub 2023 Oct 27.ABSTRACTChemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP) is one of the most prominent and incapacitating complication associated with chemotherapeutic regimens. The exact mechanisms underlying CINP are not fully understood yet, which hampers the development of effective therapeutics. The current study has been designed to investigate the effect of bergenin on CINP and dissect the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms. Behavioural responsiveness assays were conducted in rats before and after CINP induction and at different...

The impact of novel inflammation-preserving treatment towards lumbar disc herniation resorption in symptomatic patients: a prospective, multi-imaging and clinical outcomes study
ConclusionThis is the first study to note inflammation-preserving treatment, without conventional anti-inflammatory and steroid medications, as safe and effective for patients with an acute LDH. Rate of disc resorption (100%) was higher than comparative recent meta-analysis findings (66.7%) and no patient underwent surgery. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Evaluating the Effects of Probiotic Supplementation on Neuropathic Pain and Oxidative Stress Factors in an Animal Model of Chronic Constriction Injury of the Sciatic Nerve
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that probiotics have analgesic effects on the CCI model of neuropathic pain via increasing the antioxidant capacity of the rats' sciatic nerve.HIGHLIGHTS: Oral probiotics mixture diminishes cold and mechanical allodynia in chronic constriction injury (CCI) rats.Probiotics mixture reduces thermal hyperalgesia in CCI rats as well as gabapentine.Balancing in oxidant/anti-oxidant system is key pathway in neuropathic pain reduction.PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Currently, neuropathic pain is an underestimated socioeconomic health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Priapism associated with anti-seizure medications: a pharmacovigilance study and a review of published cases
CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified signals for priapism for several anti-seizure medications, but these results need to be confirmed in well-designed pharmacoepidemiological studies.PMID:38062555 | DOI:10.1080/14740338.2023.2293208 (Source: Expert Opinion on Drug Safety)

Characterizing Opioid Prescribing Trends of Medical Oncologists From 2013 to 2019: Analysis From the Centers for Medicare & amp; Medicaid Services Medicare Part D Prescribers Database
CONCLUSION: Opioid prescriptions by medical oncologists decreased significantly from 2013 to 2019, but this decrease was most substantial from 2017 to 2019. These results may imply that the 2016 CDC guidelines influenced medical oncologists, particularly more junior physicians in urban settings, to manage chronic cancer pain with alternative therapies.PMID:38061003 | DOI:10.1200/OP.23.00285 (Source: Pain Physician)
