Effects of Gabapentin on Postoperative Pain and Opioid Consumption Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Gabapentin can be added as part of the multimodal pain management for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Extrapolation of these findings to clinical settings must take into consideration the limitations identified in this review.PMID:37855760 | DOI:10.1016/j.jopan.2023.06.005 (Source: Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing)

Comparative Descriptive Analysis of Physician Versus Patient-Directed Gabapentin Usage In Chronic Pain - A Preliminary Report
CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study suggests that a significant portion of patients choose to administer variable doses of gabapentin and associate this with better efficacy and satisfaction. A larger study is needed to confirm this supposition. Based upon this pilot study, the variable dosing option may be an option for improved therapeutic efficacy or as an alternative to those whose lifestyles do not allow for fixed dosing regimens. Discussion of the risks of gabapentin, including respiratory depression, and clear dosage parameters of use, would need to be outlined when considering a variable dose regimen.PMID:37847922 (Source: Pain Physician)

5,7-Dimethoxycoumarin ameliorates vincristine induced neuropathic pain: potential role of 5HT3 receptors and monoamines
This study was designed to investigate the possible analgesic and antiallodynic effects of 5,7-DMC in a murine model of VINP. Vincristine was administered to groups of BALB/c male mice (0.1 mg/kg intraperitoneally) once daily for 14 days to induce VINP. Thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia were quantified using the tail immersion test and von Frey filament application method. The levels of monoamine neurotransmitters and vitamin C in frontal cortical, striatal and hippocampal tissues, as well as the TNF-α level in plasma, were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography and ELISA respectively. On da...

Dose rationale for gabapentin and tramadol in pediatric patients with chronic pain
Exposure-guided dose rationale for gabapentin and tramadol in pediatric chronic pain. Upper panels: Simulated concentration versus time profiles of gabapentin (A) and tramadol (B) on the last day of each titration step. Data are shown stratified by weight band for gabapentin. Solid line shows the median, shaded area indicates the 95% confidence interval. Lower panels: Whisker-box plots showing the predicted AUC for gabapentin (C) and predicted AUC for tramadol (D) for each titration step. Gabapentin results are compared to the observed AUC values after doses of 1.2 –3.6 g to adult subjects. Dotted red line shows the pu...

Using pharmacotherapy to address sleep disturbances in autism spectrum disorders
Expert Rev Neurother. 2023 Oct 9. doi: 10.1080/14737175.2023.2267761. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Sleep disorders are the second most common medical comorbidity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with effects on daytime behavior and functioning, mood and anxiety, and autism core features. In children with ASD, insomnia has also a negative impact on the whole family quality of life. Therefore, treatment of sleep disturbances should be considered as a primary goal in the management of ASD patients, and it is important to clarify the scientific evidence to inappropriate treatments.AREAS COVERED: The authors re...
