Metformin alleviates pathologic pain in mice with radiation dermatitis by inhibiting p38MAPK/NF- κB signaling pathway
CONCLUSION: Metformin can significantly ameliorate pathological pain symptoms in mice with radiation dermatitis possibly by inhibiting the activation of p38MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway.PMID:37933660 | PMC:PMC10630197 | DOI:10.12122/j.issn.1673-4254.2023.10.22 (Source: Journal of Southern Medical University)

Where Will Gabapentin ’s Bumpy Road Lead us? A Narrative Review of Pediatric Perioperative Gabapentinoids
AbstractPurpose of ReviewGabapentinoids, including gabapentin and pregabalin, have been commonly administered in the perioperative period since opioid-sparing effects were found in adults in the early 2000s. This review examines the current evidence for and against the perioperative use of gabapentinoids in children and identifies potential future directions for research.Recent FindingsMany factors led to increasing use of gabapentinoids for surgical patients. The national opioid epidemic hastened the move toward the use of multimodal analgesia and early recovery after surgery protocols for both adults and children. Howeve...

Gabapentin and oral antidepressants for chronic pruritus: a prospective cohort study evaluating efficacy and side effects in daily dermatological practice
CONCLUSION: Treatment with gabapentin and antidepressants should be considered in patients with chronic pruritus unresponsive to conventional treatment.PMID:37905412 | DOI:10.1080/09546634.2023.2274291 (Source: Journal of Dermatological Treatment)

Gabapentinoids and the risk of severe exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Conclusions: In patients with COPD, gabapentinoid use was associated with severe COPD exacerbation, highlighting the importance of risk-benefit assessment when prescribing them in this population. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Gabapentin May Not Decrease Opioid Use in Pediatric Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocols
In adults, the use of gabapentin in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols is associated with increased morbidity and clinically insignificant improvement in postoperative pain control. Furthermore, there are limited data supporting its use in pediatric ERAS protocols. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Long-term benzodiazepine usage and mortality in patients with chronic non-cancer musculoskeletal pain: A Nationwide cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Benzodiazepine was prescribed to 2.1% of the patients with CNCP in South Korea from 2010 to 2019. Old age, increased CCI, underlying psychiatric comorbidities, and use of certain drugs are associated with increased use of benzodiazepines. In addition, benzodiazepine use is associated with 10-year all-cause mortality in patients with CNCP.PMID:37872848 | DOI:10.1111/papr.13312 (Source: Cancer Control)

A Report of a Case of Segmental Zoster Paresis Demonstrated by Limb Paralysis and a Review of the Literature
Cureus. 2023 Sep 21;15(9):e45691. doi: 10.7759/cureus.45691. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTVaricella zoster virus (VZV) lies dormant in our spinal dorsal root ganglia until reactivation occurs and causes herpes zoster. VZV can spread from the dorsal root to the neighboring ventral root and cause subsequent segmental paresis. In this case report, we present the case of a 78-year-old female who was hospitalized after she developed right upper extremity paresis and altered mental status four days after the eruption of a vesicular rash involving the same dermatome. The patient received intravenous acyclovir, gabapentin, and inp...
