Intercostal Nerve Cryoablation or Epidural Analgesia for Multimodal Pain Management after the Nuss Procedure: A Cohort Study
Conclusions Intercostal nerve cryoablation is a superior analgesic method compared with CEA, with reduced LOS, opioid use, and NRS pain scores. The prophylactic use of gabapentin is redundant. Physician Approaches to the Pharmacologic Treatment of Dystonia in Cerebral Palsy
CONCLUSIONS: This study summarizes current indications and dosing for the six most commonly used medications to treat dystonia in CP as per treating physicians in the US and Canada and also demonstrates physician support for a randomized trial comparing the effectiveness of these treatments.ARTICLE SUMMARY: Dystonia is common and debilitating in people with CP, with little data on pharmacologic treatments. We describe physicians' current approaches to using these treatments.WHAT’S KNOWN ON THIS SUBJECT: Comparing the effectiveness of existing pharmacologic treatments for dystonia in CP is a research priority shared by cl...

Gabapentin attenuates cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction by inhibiting M1 macrophage polarization through the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor- γ pathway
CONCLUSION: Gabapentin attenuates cardiac remodeling by inhibiting inflammation via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ activation and preventing calcium overload.PMID:38350591 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2024.176398 (Source: European Journal of Pharmacology)

Gefapixant for Chronic Cough —Reply
In Reply We thank Dr Turner and colleagues for their interest in our meta-analysis and for the opportunity to clarify aspects of the study. We agree that we should not dismiss the use of gefapixant in clinical practice based on our analysis. Few treatment options exist for patients with refractory or unexplained chronic cough. For those who have tried all other therapies without success, we believe that gefapixant provides an option, one that is likely safer than alternatives (ie, opioids, pregabalin, gabapentin). Phenibut: Review and Pharmacologic Approaches to Treating Withdrawal
J Clin Pharmacol. 2024 Feb 10. doi: 10.1002/jcph.2414. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTβ-Phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid (phenibut) is an analog of the inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) that was first synthesized in Russia in the early 1960s. It is marketed as a nootropic (smart drug) to improve cognitive performance, and to treat generalized and social anxiety, insomnia, and alcohol withdrawal. The use of phenibut is legal in the USA and it is widely available online without a prescription. Increased public awareness of phenibut has led to a growing number of reports of acute intoxication and withdrawal. ...

The effect of gabapentin and pregabalin on agitation in dementia: Case series of ten patients
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2024 Feb 3:S0035-3787(24)00020-1. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2023.11.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeurobehavioral symptoms are difficult to manage in dementia patients. Agitation may negatively impact patients' health and increase the caregiver burden. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches can be adopted to reduce agitation. Recently, positive effects of gabapentinoids have been identified in case reports with promising results and good safety profiles. This observational study was aimed to evaluate the effects of gabapentinoids (gabapentin and pregabalin) on agitation in patients with dem...

Inpatient Management of Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Obstet Gynecol. 2024 Feb 1. doi: 10.1097/AOG.0000000000005518. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHyperemesis gravidarum has a reported incidence of approximately 0.3-3% of pregnancies. Without treatment, refractory hyperemesis gravidarum can result in dehydration, electrolyte deficiencies, and severe nutritional deficiencies, resulting in significant maternal morbidity. The overall goals of inpatient management of refractory hyperemesis gravidarum are the resumption of oral intake to an adequate level to maintain hydration and nutrition, including the ability to tolerate oral pharmacotherapy. Patients initially are stabilized ...

J-2156, a small molecule somatostatin type 4 receptor agonist, alleviated hindpaw hypersensitivity in the streptozotocin-induced rat model of painful diabetic neuropathy but with a 2-fold decrease in potency at an advanced stage in the model, mimicking morphine
There is a large unmet need for novel pain-killers to improve relief of painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN). Herein, we assessed the efficacy of the somatostatin type 4 (SST4) receptor agonist, J-2156, for relief of PDN in rats. Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin (STZ; 70 mg/kg) and bilateral hindpaw hypersensitivity was fully developed by 8-week post-STZ. In the intervals, 8–12-weeks (morphine-sensitive phase; Phase 1) and 16–18-weeks (morphine-hyposensitive phase; Phase 2) post-STZ, rats received a single dose of intraperitoneal (i.p.) J-2156 (10, 20, 30 mg/kg), gabapentin (100 mg/kg i.p.), subcutaneous morphi...

Gabapentinoids and lactation: Review of the literature
Agri. 2024 Jan;36(1):64-67. doi: 10.14744/agri.2021.55531.ABSTRACTGabapentin and pregabalin, which belong to the gabapentinoid drug family, are widely used, especially in neuropathic pain treatment, due to their effectiveness in pain management. Although many of the comorbidities and symptoms that limit the use of gabapentinoids are clearly described in the literature, there is limited data on their use during lactation. A 33-year-old female patient was admitted to our clinic with neuropathic pain and muscle weakness in her left lower extremity following spinal anesthesia for a cesarean section. We aimed to present the gab...
