Resistant Infections in Emergency Department Patients with Suspected Sepsis. The American journal of the medical sciences 360(6): 650-655.
Background: Inappropriate antibiotic therapy in sepsis is associated with poor outcomes, clinicians often provide routine coverage for multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. However, these regimens may contribute to problems related to antibiotic overuse. To understand the incidence and related factors of multidrug resistant bacterial infections in ED patients with sepsis, we examined how often patients with sepsis in our emergency department had MDR infections. We also explored risk factors for, and outcomes from, MDR bacterial infections.; Methods: We reviewed records of patients presenting to our emergency department (ED) ...

Quick and sensitive identification of multidrug-resistant germs
(Swiss Nanoscience Institute, University of Basel) Researchers from the University of Basel have developed a sensitive testing system that allows the rapid and reliable detection of resistance in bacteria. The system is based on tiny, functionalized cantilevers that bend due to binding of sample material. In the analyses, the system was able to detect resistance in a sample quantity equivalent to 1-10 bacteria. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Calcium bursts kill drug-resistant tumor cells
(American Chemical Society) Multidrug resistance (MDR) -- a process in which tumors become resistant to multiple medicines -- is the main cause of failure of cancer chemotherapy. Tumor cells often acquire MDR by boosting their production of proteins that pump drugs out of the cell, rendering the chemotherapies ineffective. Now, researchers reporting in ACS'Nano Letters have developed nanoparticles that release bursts of calcium inside tumor cells, inhibiting drug pumps and reversing MDR. Sepsis in surgical inpatients: under-recognised but with significant consequences
Conclusion(s): Sepsis was under-documented, and barriers exist with use of the national sepsis screening form. Frailty, which is a sepsis risk factor, should be assessed pre-operatively to maximise prevention. (Source: Current Awareness Service for Health (CASH))

Test accurately IDs people whose gonorrhea can be cured with simple oral antibiotic
A test designed by UCLA researchers can pinpoint which people with gonorrhea will respond successfully to the inexpensive oral antibiotic ciprofloxacin, which had previously been sidelined over concerns the bacterium that causes the infection was becoming resistant to it.In research published in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Infectious Diseases,a UCLA-led team found thatof106 subjectsthe test identified as having a strain ofgonorrhea called wild-type gyrA serine, all were cured with a single dose of oral ciprofloxacin. Though the test has been available for three years, this is the first time it has been systematicall...

New generation of drugs show early efficacy against drug-resistant TB
(Harvard Medical School) New drug regimen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis shows early effectiveness in 85 percent of patients in a cohort including many with serious comorbidities. The results suggest a global need for expanded access to two recently developed medicines, bedaquiline and delamanid. Study cohort included many people who would have been excluded from trials because of comorbidities, severity of disease or extent of drug resistance. Findings highlight the importance of innovative regimens to improve outcomes for patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)
