Three shades of black - secondary thrombotic microangiopathy
Indian J Pathol Microbiol. 2022 Oct-Dec;65(4):898-901. doi: 10.4103/ijpm.ijpm_1237_21.ABSTRACTThrombotic microangiopathy is a group of disorders characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and organ damage. Wide age distribution and the heterogeneity in presentation demand a deeper understanding into the pathogenesis of TMA. Primary TMA is distinct from TMA associated with secondary causes and remains clinically occult till a precipitating factor aggravates it. The extent and severity of renal damage caused by each of them is also distinct. The first alerting signal could be the presence of schisti...

A new treatment strategy for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura in developing countries: A single dose rituximab-contained regimen
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and consumptive thrombocytopenia, with or without end-organ damage. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are vital due to its life-threatening severity [1]. The use of plasma exchange has decreased the mortality rate of TTP from>90  % to (Source: Thrombosis Research)

Targeting the innate repair receptor axis via erythropoietin or pyroglutamate helix B surface peptide attenuates hemolytic-uremic syndrome in mice
In conclusion, targeting the EPO-R/IRR axis reduced mortality and renal oxidative stress in murine HUS without occurrence of thromboembolic complications or other adverse side effects. We therefore suggest that repurposing EPO for the treatment of patients with hemolytic anemia in HUS should be systematically investigated in future clinical trials. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Therapeutic plasma exchange in gastric signet ring cell carcinoma presenting as microangiopathic hemolytic anemia: A rare case report
J Clin Apher. 2022 Sep 20. doi: 10.1002/jca.22013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) defines a group of disorders characterized by the formation of microthrombi in capillaries and arterioles and the fragmentation of erythrocytes that pass through. Cancer-related MAHA is a rare but serious condition that is encountered in patients diagnosed with a malignancy. This clinical picture is thought to be linked to certain tumor characteristics; particularly, adenocarcinoma histology, vascular invasion, and bone marrow infiltration. MAHA is most commonly associated with tumors of gastric, prosta...
