Anesthesia after IM vs GI/cardiology/heme onc fellowship
Current PGY2 IM resident. My goal is to make as much money as possible and retire, I am willing to work harder than a resident to do so for 10 years post training, and I am willing to move to much less desired parts of the USA. Is Anesthesia a better avenue to do this or is GI? I look at some of the locums offers for anesthesia and it seems like working for $350/hr could easily get you over 1M/year, $350/hr * 12hr/day * 6 days/week * 50 weeks a year = 1.2M. I don't see any offers close to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

1099, Locums and PSA
Folks I'm compelled to step in here and write a few comments. Finally got my account activated after lurking for a long time. First: anyone accepting less than 2600$/day (current ask: 2800/day) plus FULL EXPENSES for ANY locums job is hurting themselves AND hurting the market for others. I have not accepted less for about 7 years. Thats right, SEVEN YEARS.... or more. True, I'm experienced and have a "nice CV" but so what? When they need someone, they need someone. I have worked... Applying for a Wisconsin medical license
I'm in my last year of residency in Michigan, preparing to register for the boards. This requires that I be in the process of applying for my real, unrestricted medical license in the state in which I plan to do fellowship. When using the "LicensE" system to apply for my medical license, it gives us five options: Special Permit Applicant granted a unique permit under a special circumstance, i.e., locum tenens. Act 10 This license can be issued to a provider from another state... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Direction of Locums Rates
With the continuing shortage of anesthesiologists/CRNAs in the environment where hospitals are currently facing large deficits and reimbursements are decreasing, how do you see locums rates trending in the near future? Are you noticing rates are continuing to increase, or have they leveled off some? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Envision is offering $400/hr for locums. Too bad even that isn't enough
I have been offered $400/hr to cover locums shifts for Envision. I looked into it just a little bit, and the rate is for two of their sites in Southern California. The problem is that they are being kicked out of both sites in February, 2023. And the medical staff seems to have caught on to Envision's scam, because even though Envision touted "emergency credentials," the hospitals' medical staffs aren't playing ball. It seems very much to me that the hospitals realize that Envision is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How long does it take to lose OR skills if one is practicing in the ICU?
Just wanted to get the consensus out there as far as what you guys think. I am trying to get back to the OR and some locums companies seem to think that it will be difficult with all my time spent in the ICU over the past couple of years. Would you guys be comfortable with someone coming from the ICU to the OR without any supervised or remedial training? I mean, other than speed, I can't see the problem and I think this thinking is draconian and outdated. Or patients are a lot healthier... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Attitude change with younger RTs
Anyone else find themselves working with a lot of gen Z/young millennial RTs that like to have opinions? I'm locums working at multiple sites and the RTs keep trending younger, the game now is apparently to talk the physician down from whatever intervention is requested. Patient needs a tube? Why not put them on bipap instead. Patient needs bipap? Why not put them on a nonrebreather for heart failure. Need deep suction for bronchiolitis? Why not try a bulb. Young people suck.
