Small dose precedex on induction?
The place I'm currently doing locums at many of the MDs and crnas give a small dose (16-24) of precedex on induction. No infusion, for short and long cases. I use precedex for infusions for TIVAs, wakeups in drug addicts or people who look like they're going to be bucking broncos. I think it's somewhat institutional, but the usual response I get is to decrease opioid use but I don't see this and it clinically doesn't make sense given the dose/length of surgery. What is this providing? Is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Feasibility of picking up locums 3-6 months a year?
Spouse and I have decided to check out. We're going to "retire" early and get rid of our house and her job. Plan is to slow travel 6-9 months a year; i.e. spending a couple of months apiece in a few different locations abroad. We're going to let our nest egg grow over the next 20 or so years while we fund ourselves with work I do 3-6 months of the year. How realistic is this and/or what would be the best way to accomplish this? I would probably end up committing to working half the year... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

State of anesthesiology
The Current and Future State of Anesthesiology: Good, Bad, or Indifferent? | ASA Monitor | American Society of Anesthesiologists pubs.asahq.org great summary of current challenges. Explains why anesthesiologists are flocking to locums/prn/independent setups or atleast incorporating that in their practices. We all know the issues What’s the solution? Direct hospital employment? What needs to happen to stop the hemorrhage? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Casting a wide net
What should I be looking for in residency programs if my goals after residency are: 1) maximal flexibility (walk away from a bad employer, locum work, telehealth, etc.) 2) maximal hourly rate 3) minimal required weekly work hours Basically I'd like the option to work as little or as much as is needed. Only a 2nd year medical student here but I see the lay of the corporate medicine land that awaits me. Torn between FM and IM as I'm unsure which one will be best for moving between running... What states have easiest/cheapest to obtain licenses?
I am a locums physician who is licensed and live in NY (so I don't qualify for IMLC). Unfortunately NY jobs in my field (hospitalist) have become fewer and far between. Most jobs in other states require an active license, or at the very least, an IMLC. Thus I'd like to invest in some licenses in other states, but not sure which ones to aim for strategically. Was wondering if anyone may have recommendations. I'd want a license that is relatively cheap, fast to get, can qualify for IMLC, and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

W2 job + 1099 locum
I am a hospital employed pain doc. Have been thinking about doing locum anesthesia a couple of times a month given this hot anes job market. I am not very educated in finance and will be very appreciated if you guys could answer some questions. Will the 1099 job open the opportunity to contribute a whole IRA contribution (not sure how much) each year? I max out 403b and 457 from my W2 job plus a backdoor IRA. What about writing off some expenses with this 1099 income? I’ve heard there... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

State of Locums market
I am hearing that the number of Locum opportunities are decreasing from different Locum companies. I know a handful of my friends who are all doing full time locums work including call. The AMCs that are running the hospital are not able to fully staff anesthesiologist groups because every 3 nights call, poor pay, flat reimbursement and not based on productivity. The result is that full timers are not doing any cases till 3-5 Pm and make the locums do all the day time cases. Full timers... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

guarantee non in house (beeper) locums guaranteed money
I’m not gonna to tell where this is at. But I’m sure its all over the country and completely negotiable. Seems like desperation sets in but somehow my friends are getting 10k flat rate for local community hospital with 90% chance of being done by 8pm and no call backs. MD only. 24 hour weekend call. Hospital wants beeper rate but since there is super light ob. U kinda of need to be around the area even without a running epidural. 90% of the time. No laboring patients after 6/7pm usually... What if situations.........
I have been looking at locums options for a change of pace. Something I have always wondered as I know where I worked prior fired someone for cause and I know people get malpractice suits. How do these psychiatrists get jobs later on? I am constantly asked about 10-15 questions regarding have you ever had this that or the other happen like malpractice, terminated, lost privileges, professional organization, etc. Like most I worry about a malpractice suit that is BS just because we deal... Peds/Locum threads
Hi, apologies (I did search a bit--but haven't figured out how to restrict searches to the peds forums). My mother--a pediatrician--is partially retired and thinking of doing locums at a nearby hospital. I do mainly locums but in neurology, so while I'm very concerned to protect my mother from the scummy stuff I see (it takes awhile to get educated on rates, how to negotiate with locums) I have no idea of pediatric locums rates/salaries, what to look into etc. Anyone have any insight on... Locums
Hello, I am looking into my first locums job and the locums agency has asked me to sign a PSA before they present my CV to the employer. The job is seeing 10 patients/day with developmental disability/intellectual disability for one day/week. I do not know the employer name yet and the agency said that once my name is cleared by the employer, they will inform me of the name. The agency rep said that signing the Provider Service Agreement(PSA) is the only way to proceed. Is this standard... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
