When most start their first job?
After residency, when do most family physicians start their first job? I've heard it can take months for licensure, privileging, and getting on insurance panels. What do you do in the meantime after residency to live off of? Is it easy to find locums for a few months? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Routine Prone LMA Insertion
I am a troglodyte, learning anesthesiology during the Pleistocene epoch. During a locums assignment recently, I came upon what I believe is a curious practice at a surgery center. Patients for prone surgery are routinely placed in that position on the OR table, then are given 200mg propofol plus 100mg lidocaine after which have an LMA placed (by CRNAs). The reason for this appears to be self serving by the surgery center staff in order to save their backs from having to roll patients into... Pick your colleague and why?
Option A: Mid-career (15 years experience) fellowship-trained in pain. Married with two kids. Worked brief stint in academia, then locums for a number of years, then a couple gigs with various large health systems. No true PP experience. Competent in all interventional modalities, but rather opinionated with possibly an exaggerated sense of self-worth. Spent 30 mins in interview talking about a "conspiracy" at last job involving unfounded allegations made about a HIPPA violation. At the end... Pick your colleague and why? ICU locums
Highly considering locum after finishing fellowship and curious about average hourly pay rate. Does anyone have any experience with locums and pay rate. Also, if you have experience with locums how has it been? what has been you expected procedures (cvc, art lines, bronchs). I am Pulm/Crit, but do most of these jobs want SICU coverage, MICU coverage or both. I did do a search and did find threads about salary, but not locum pay rates..Thanks in advance (Source: Student Doctor Network)

LOCUMS vs Permanent job in pulm/cc?
I wanted to know what everyone's opinion was regarding Locums vs permanent position. I am looking at staying in las vegas, Nevada primarily. It seems like most first year salaries from pulm/cc are about 300-400k depending on various factors however it does seem like a lot of locums firms can get you contracted at a higher hourly rate which would easily put someone into mid 400's. I know that benefits might not be all that great doing locums but would the precipitous jump in salary be worth... LOCUMS vs Permanent job in pulm/cc? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Using recruiter for locums hospitalist work?
Is this how most people find parttime/locums hospitalist work? I am wondering however if there are disadvantages to using a recruiter - such as salary/hourly rate? If you don't use a recruiter, do you just try to contact the hospitals directly? Recently I was in a situation where one recruiter was giving one hourly rate but another company was stating a higher rate for the same hospital. But because I was already working with the first recruiter (the one w a lower rate) on another... Using recruiter for locums hospitalist work? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Texas
Random question. I've been doing locums for the past year and it has been pretty good. Thinking about moving down to Texas with the fam for the next year and giving it a shot. Make some good money without sleeping in a hotel. When you do locums you realize some of the places you work (Missouri, Illinois) have horrible malpractice laws. So Texas is pretty tempting to sleep better at night. Any thoughts on towns that would be nice and not too mean to a brown man and his family? Missouri... Texas (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Establishing Florida residency
I'm nearing the last month or two of residency. I want to establish Florida residency. The plan is to work locums until I can find a position at non-HCA hospital within Miami, FL. Has anyone moved to Florida to establish residency and made it work to avoid paying state income taxes? New York City/New York State income taxes are ridiculously high. I pay 3.6% city tax alone. I believe I saw that I have to physically be in Florida at least 6 months and 1 day to qualify as a resident. Does... Establishing Florida residency (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Locums or no?
Hello everyone – First off, I want to THANK all the long time posters (Dr. McNinja, WCI, EmergentMD, Veers, Birdstrike and the list goes on). I’ve been lurking here since undergrad and I can’t say enough how much I’ve gained from your unfiltered thoughts and opinions. That being said: I'm entering my final year of residency and I'm looking for some guidance in planning out my career over the next 1-3 years. My goal is to work 3-5 non-consecutive months then travel/explore outside... Locums or no? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Firefighter Position
So i'm resurrecting an old topic in a new thread. Does anyone have experience as a "firefigher" with any of the CMGs?- I don't know anyone who has personally done it but it sounds as though everyone who has done locums loves the position temporarily because of the freedom it provides in scheduling/no meetings/etc.. The "firefigher position" sounds stressful, but i'm wondering what are the absolute worst cons/negatives about the position? The appeal is of course more control over schedule... Locums
I'm considering early retirement with some locums to supplement income. Somewhere between 3 to 6 months a year. Few questions for those who have done locums before: 1 Do they pay for your flight? Let's say it is a 2 to 3 hr flight. 2 Do they pay for a car rental? 3 What is the going rate for cardiac? How much for call and overtime? 4 How do you deal with health insurance for the family? 5 How much money you think you can make working 6 months, taking call and overtime?
