Increased oxidative stress in shoe industry workers with low-level exposure to a mixture of volatile organic compounds
This study aimed to assess the redox status and trace metal levels in 49 shoe industry workers (11 men and 38 women) occupationally exposed to a mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which includes aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, ethers, and carboxylic acids. All measured VOCs were below the permitted occupational exposure limits. The control group included 50 unexposed participants (25 men and 25 women). The following plasma parameters were analysed: superoxide anion (O2 •-), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), total oxidative status (TOS), prooxidant-antioxidant balance (...

Review of childhood genetic nephrolithiasis and nephrocalcinosis
Nephrolithiasis (NL) is a common condition worldwide. The incidence of NL and nephrocalcinosis (NC) has been increasing, along with their associated morbidity and economic burden. The etiology of NL and NC is multifactorial and includes both environmental components and genetic components, with multiple studies showing high heritability. Causative gene variants have been detected in up to 32% of children with NL and NC. Children with NL and NC are genotypically heterogenous, but often phenotypically relatively homogenous, and there are subsequently little data on the predictors of genetic childhood NL and NC. Most genetic ...

Bis(aluminyl)magnesium: a source of nucleophilic or radical aluminium-centred reactivity
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 Mar 27:e202405053. doi: 10.1002/anie.202405053. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe homoleptic magnesium bis(aluminyl) compound Mg[Al(NON)]2 (NON = 4,5-bis(2,6-diisopropylanilido)-2,7-di-tert-butyl -9,9-dimethylxanthene) can be accessed from K2[Al(NON)]2 and MgI2 and shown to possess a non-linear geometry (ÐAl-Mg-Al = 164.8(1)°) primarily due to the influence of dispersion interactions. This compound acts a four-electron reservoir in the reductive de-fluorination of SF6, and reacts thermally with polar substrates such as MeI via nucleophilic attack through aluminium, consistent with the QT-AIM ...

Sodium hydroxide/magnesium chloride multistage activated sludge biochar: interfacial chemical behavior and Cd(II) adsorption performance
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32972-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo enhance the adsorption performance of municipal sludge biochar on Cd(II), modified sludge biochar was prepared by sodium hydroxide/magnesium chloride (NaOH/MgCl2) graded activation, and the Cd(II) adsorption performance on sludge biochar (BC), NaOH-activated sludge biochar (NBC) and NaOH/MgCl2 activated sludge biochar (NBC-Mg) was investigated. The results showed that NaOH/MgCl2 graded activation upgraded the surface structure and enhanced the graphitization of sludge biochar. The adsorption experiments indicated that...

Evaluating hydrogeochemistry and heavy metal contamination of groundwater at Ranipet environs: employing multivariate statistics, agricultural indices, and health risk assessment
This study assessed groundwater quality and its suitability for domestic, agricultural, and human health risk assessments. 40 groundwater samples (28 open wells and 12 bore wells) were collected during pre-monsoon 2022 and analyzed by employing multivariate statistics, standard scatter plots, irrigation indices, and health risk assessment. The results of hydrogeochemical analysis and multivariate statistics affirmed that electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), calcium (Ca2+), and magnesium (Mg2+) have controlled the hydrochemistry of RIE. Cadmium (Cd) at 46% and chromium (Cr) at 33% have contaminated th...

Development of a simple paste for 3D printing of drug formulations containing a mesoporous material loaded with a poorly water-soluble drug
This study showcases the feasibility of a straightforward yet groundbreaking hybrid 3D printing system employing SSE to incorporate drug-loaded mesoporous magnesium carbonate (MMC) into two different drug formulations, each designed for distinct administration routes. MMC was loaded with the poorly water-soluble drug ibuprofen via a solvent evaporation method and mixed with PEG 400 as a binder and lubricant, facilitating subsequent SSE. The formulation is non-aqueous, unlike most pastes which are used for SSE, and thus is beneficial for the incorporation of poorly water-soluble drugs. The 3D printing process yielded tablet...
