Critical Care and Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Guidelines
Anyone got some good websites for a pharmacist to brush up on critical care and emergency med topics? I've been working overnights inpatient the last 3 months, and I've been noticing these topics are the main things that the residents call down to ask about. Eg: recently learned that giving Calcium won't do much if the Magnesium is also low. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Magnesium C section
hi folks. had a patient with gestational hypertension (no evidence of proteinuria) who had Mg running as per OB service. pt was brought to the OR for fetal intolerance/decels. spinal was placed and by this time i had stopped the Mg infusion since i didn't think pt had preeclampsia and there was no need for seizure prophylaxis. anyways the OB was not happy i had stopped the infusion and told me that the patient was still high risk for seizures. i know this is true for pre-eclamptics but... Highest Boiling Point
Which solution has the HIGHEST boiling point? (Berkeley Review Gen Chem. Part 2, page 90, example 7.16) A.) 0.10 moles magnesium chloride in 100 mL water B.) 0.15 moles lithium bromide in 150 mL water C.) 0.20 moles sodium iodide in 100 mL water D.) 0.25 moles potassium fluoride in 150 mL water The answer is "C'. I put "A". I used the formula for finding the increase in boiling point when solute is added to a solution: Delta Tb = kb*i*m I calculated the (i*m) values for each of the... MgSO4 as analgesia?
After reading some recent posts on here I decided to explore using magnesium as an adjunct for analgesia. I was on call last night and had exlap for SBO. I did some brief research during the case and found various regimens people tried and for ease I went with the single bolus of 50mg/kg. My staff (I'm a CA3) were a little nervous as this ended up being 4g based on estimated weight of 80kg. Ended up getting 50mcg of fentanyl at induction, 100mcg around incision and 0.5mg dilaudid on... MgSO4 as analgesia? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

DAT Destroyer - Gen Chem - Question on Ksp #315
For the K constants we never include solids or liquids because they have an activity of 1. We only include gasses and aq. substances . So I dont understand how this questions answers can be written correctly , if for the Ksp they all include magnesium . And Magnesium is a metal and thus Mg is a solid and thus would have an activity of 1 and not be included in our Equilibrium Constant Expressions. So none of the answers should include Magnesium ? Physical Exam Manuevers and Detecting abnormal findings as a medical student
So one of things we are expected to do on my service is the routine checks. For OB this includes being the sentinel for magnesium toxicity since DTRs are present before coma and respiratory depression...this includes reflexes, heart, and lungs. On my first check I was able to hear the lungs but not the heart (not sure exactly why). Then, tendons literally took 10 minutes and I got lucky in the end and elicited a brachioradialis) So when I entered my first note I said lung sounds negatives... Mystery illness - seeking opinions
Hi! I guess I am just looking for opinions on whether or not I should seek CF testing. I'm sorry this is so long! Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer some advice. I've been "sick" on and off for a few years now. As a child I had strep throat A LOT until my tonsils were removed. I was also suspected to have asthma. I don't know how it was decided I didn't. I cleared my throat absolutely constantly but to my knowledge this was not investigated. As a preteen I had a heart murmur that apparently went away and had a couple fainting episodes and was diagnosed with syncope. I was pretty healthy through my t...
