CLSI-based verification and < em > de novo < /em > establishment of reference intervals for common biochemical assays in Croatian newborns
CONCLUSIONS: The CALIPER reference intervals can be implemented into routine laboratory and clinical practice for the tested newborn population for most of the analyzed assays, while own reference intervals for potassium, magnesium and direct bilirubin have been determined.PMID:38665867 | PMC:PMC11042559 | DOI:10.11613/BM.2024.020705 (Source: Biochemia Medica)

Fertilizer application alters cadmium and selenium bioavailability in soil-rice system with high geological background levels
Environ Pollut. 2024 Apr 24:124033. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.124033. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe co-occurrence of cadmium (Cd) pollution and selenium (Se) deficiency commonly exists in global soils, especially in China. As a result, there is great interest in developing practical agronomic strategies to simultaneously achieve Cd remediation and Se mobilization in paddy soils, thereby enhancing food quality/safety. To this end, we conducted a field-plot trial on soils having high geological background levels of Cd (0.67 mg kg-1) and Se (0.50 mg kg-1). We explored 12 contrasting fertilizers (urea, potassium sulfate (...

Ultralong-life and high-capacity magnesium/sodium hybrid-ion battery using a ternary CoSe/NiSe < sub > 2 < /sub > /CuSe < sub > 2 < /sub > cathode and dual-ion electrolyte
Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1039/d4cc00623b. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn ultrahigh-performance magnesium/sodium hybrid-ion battery (MNHB) is developed using ternary CoSe/NiSe2/CuSe2 (CNCS) "micro-flowers" as cathode materials, working with a coordinative [Mg2Cl2][AlCl4]2 and bis(trifluoroethylsulfonyl)imide anionic sodium salt in triglyme electrolyte. After 2000 cycles at 2.0 A g-1, the MNHB shows a stable capacity of 115.5 mA h g-1 and a high Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.8%. The battery shows very rapid charging, and good stability in extreme environments, providing new opportunities to develop othe...

Are the elements zinc, copper, magnesium, and rubidium related to nutrition and iodine deficiency in pregnant Bulgarian women from iodine deficient region?
CONCLUSION: The high Cu levels were associated with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and less pulse consumption during pregnancy in an iodine deficiency endemic area. SCH was found in 24% of the pregnant women in such an area while in 13% of them SCH had progressed to overt hypothyroidism.PMID:38669155 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7796 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)
